3rd Gen Tacoma 2.7L ECU Tuning

Any progress on this?

 

They are still working on the MT tune for the 3.5, after that is done then they said they would have some time to work on the 2.7 tune.

 

Yep, we may see the first V6 M/T version drop to the masses soon. Mat is back on the ground this week so things should pick up. The first dyno pulls have been done and one guy has had 1.03 for a coupla weeks. Hang in there guys..

 

I'm more interested in better shift points for the auto tranny than squeezing power out of the 2.7L. Better driveability is more important to me but more power doesn't hurt. I'm going for LCE headers next and maybe electric fans.

nice I myself have ben looking into the spal 300w and 500w electric fans , there sealed and brushless fans , just may free up some ponies!!!!!

 

I've looked into electric fans too, but there's a lot of engineering behind it.

First and foremost is the actual temp control. We already have a temp sensor, but reading its input for a fan control circuit is a can of worms. Not that I couldn't potentially look up connector PNs and whip up a splice free piggyback, but at the very least you'd have to have some sort of controller read the voltage and kick on a relay. (and maybe even have a manual "on" switch)
Not rocket science, but one bullet point on a list of items. Some premade kits elect to stick a temp probe between the fins of the radiator, but that is ghetto and unreliable, in my opinion it should not be part of a proper solution.

There's also the question of A/C- you shouldn't really have the A/C running without a fan running too- so now you're looking at tying into another electric system.

Most often ignored is good shroud design. Simply zip tying a spal fan onto your rad isn't gonna cut it. Often times a kick ass fan with no shroud actually ends up netting higher temps than stock with shroud. The stock shroud is also designed around the clutch fan's "passive pull" because it's always spinning. You want something that doesn't let much air "leak" while stopped, but allows passive cooling when you are moving without the electric fan on.

Most well regarded kits give you an aluminum shroud with rubber flaps that open up for a little extra passive cooling, like this:

Note that is also sealed all around the edges with weather stripping- the seal here is super important!

I know there are some OE solutions where the 2TR is run without a clutch fan, but if I remember right that's only on the Toyota Hiace which is a bizarre cabover van thing, and the fans are mounted super low and suck air down thru the radiator.


I'll do some digging because now you've got me curious, but I think it's most likely that the 2TR tends to default to clutch fans in most applications.

So ultimately, if the end goal has to be 100% rock solid reliability the clutch fan is actually pretty damn good, all things considered, unless you spend a lot of time, research, and development on making a proper kit for the 2TR. And I've heard that it's not even that much power you free up anyways- go spin your fan blades by hand (with the engine off!! ) and you can feel it puts up some resistance, but if you've ever done a timing belt it feels like way less force than what the cams and valve springs give you.

Just my $.02, I'm not opposed to the idea but I would want to see a lot of careful thought put into the design plus some solid data to back up the claims.

 

Am I the only one who thinks the truck makes more power when it's warming up? It seems the cold start enrichment makes the truck seem more responsive..
