I've seen online that the transmission holds about 10 quarts of ATF Toyota WF fluid. I took my truck in today since the transmission was getting crazy on me lately and they discovered it was almost completely bone dry and nothing was coming out of the pan under the transmission. Does the total capacity equal about 10 quarts?

Trying to find out how something that was supposedly full the last time I had them check it is empty now. Unless the last tech accidentally busted the transmission loose at my oil change back in April.

Who and how did they check it? If you take off the drain plug which isn't a drain but an overflow plug, nothing will come out if its not overfilled or/and in the correct temperature range.
Highly doubt its bone dry. Sounds like improperly checked.
Toyota ATF fluid is WS, world standard.

An automatic transmission needs fluid to operate.... fluid is used to actually couple the motor to the transmission via the torque converter. Without fluid, the vehicle will not move under it's own power. Bone dry or close to it, your truck couldn't get to the dealership.

Interesting, so either I'm being lied to or it was just a quart low. He was saying that he was surprised it made it to the dealer and that it looked like someone tampered with the transmission nut that releases the fluid. Now that last time anyone touched the truck other than me doing the oil change Sunday was them. So unless the tech dumped a quart or so the last oil change in April, it shouldn't be that low. He said it looked like someone wiped it. I live in a rural area so I doubt anyone messed with my truck.

The dude is a honest man so I doubt he's lying. I still don't see how it was "bone dry" then. Unless there is a leak somewhere else.

No such nut. Full fluid change has to be sucked out with a vacuum system. There is no drain. Its a sealed for life system. It's not that easy to just dump a quart in. You have to have it pumped up to the fill plug. Again being with in the temp range. Find a new mechanic.

I had a car that leaked tranny fluid pretty bad (turbo 400). I knew when it needed more fluid because I'd put it in gear and nothing would happen... Usually took at least a couple of quarts to get it going again. What a beater.

So they put 5 quarts in.... No way it leaked 5 quarts without me noticing, I'm anal about that kind of stuff. It must have came 5 quarts low from the factory 2 years ago. This makes me uneasy about the condition of the transmission. I may keep it until I hit 60000 and then dump the truck and get something else at this point.

I feel for ya OP but Toyota is a good company. Try to work with them so they can own up to the problem. It looks like it was probably the fault of Toyota and/or the dealer. Just keep being the squeaky wheel is what worked for me. Try to stick to the facts. This is where I went off track-I believed a problem that was suggested, not proven and I got all bent up about it.

Per the manual, capacity is 10.5-10.7 quarts. I would imagine there is a lot of slippage with that much missing, but the only way to tell is to have someone who knows what they are looking at drop the pan.

Well I attributed the crap transmission shifting due to the complaints on here and never really thought about it. I've driven a manual for 10 years and haven't head to deal with this kind of stuff lately so I'm a bit ignorant on a lot of the things a transmission should and should not do. It is still jerking a bit but I'm assuming its because it was 5 quarts low and they topped it off. I'll give it a bit and if it keeps jerking around its going back to the dealer service garage.

I would take it to a different dealer..."5 quarts" don't pass the sniff test.
