    I have a 2009 or 4.0 6mt.
A friend told me if I had a locking rear diff. I needed to add an additive to the gear oil. Is this correct? I was planning on using Mobil 1.

Nope, additive is only needed for limited slip diffs. Mobil 1 is fine as is for a locking rear diff. Make sure that you can remove the fill plug before removing the drain plug.

'09 Silver SR5 Prerunner DCSB (sold) Dick Cepek rims, 33” Cooper AT 3’s, 24 in light bar, custom-made hitch step, sport headlights (on SR5 taco), Gator tonneau cover (looking for Best Top soft camper shell), real tree seat covers, weather tech floor liners, 6’ bed mat cut to 5’ (because the 6’ ones were the only ones available, alpine touch screen head unit, alpine 1100w amp powering 2 10” subs, upgraded door speakers (forgotten the brand), Magnaflow exhaust
Is it a locker that you can unlock and relock? Like and limited slip? If so I would run a higher end oil, but I’m not an expert

It's a stock TRD off road.

I would just use the Toyota oil just to be safe

No additive needed for the TRD Off Road models with a locker. TRD Sport models with a stock Limited Slip Differential (LSD) do require an LSD additive.

As stated, the additive is for a mechanical limited slip, not locking differential or the electronic LSD that are on the later 2nd gen TRD Sport. M1 is fine, just make sure you use the correct weight.

No you don't need any additive. Just regular gear oil, synthetic if you want to get fancy. Only the 05-07 Sports had a true mechanical LSD differential....08+ uses a braking system that mimics it.

DSCN7106.jpg Most Toyotas that require LSD oil will have a white sticker on the rear end by the fill spout. If you have a E-locker you do not need LSD oil.
