I don’t usually separate and label other than loins or strap. Sometimes butt. I mainly label wtl strap or axis strap for example and date it.

But to answer your question idk. It was one pack of wtl and one pack axis. Dated only.

I did do a hind quarter axis roast last year. Was good.
I’ve been trying to get axis to jump with remote on feeder but they won’t. They come running but won’t jump. They do that all the time though just have to be ready. They usually jump on Sunday night when I’m stuffed drunk and exhausted.

    I messed up this morning.

It was super windy. Had been raining for 24 hours, and had started spitting snow. Quiet leaves + 20 mph winds means you can’t hear a damn thing.

Had a spike walk in beside me. Got my phone up and took a quick video. He looked up at me and knew I was there. But he kept looking. And kept looking. When I had a chance, I looked behind me because I thought maybe he was seeing something else coming. Turned and looked, didn’t see anything. About 20 seconds later, monster buck steps out from directly under my stand. He snuck in on me and was going to run the spike out. The wind was to my back, which meant he walked out directly downwind of me. I started reaching for my gun as soon as I saw him. But he stopped dead in his tracks when he got downwind of me. He winded me, turned and looked right at me and apparently saw me blink. Took off running and I couldn’t get a shot at him. :(

Assuming a classic broadside rifle shot...you guys like the heart/lung shot? Or do you go for the high shoulder shot? Maybe a neck shot?

I learned on the heart shot but for the last few years I've been working on my high shoulder shot. With a sturdy bullet (I load TTSXs in 308) a high shoulder shot drops them in their tracks. And the all-copper bullet doesn't sling a lot of lead everywhere and doesn't create a ton of bloodshot meat, even in the shoulder.

Anyone else prefer the high shoulder?

i prefer just to the rear of the shoulder, either double lung or heart shot. I dont always get where i want but Ive yet to lose a deer with my rifle. Nothing wrong with a shoulder shot but I hate to lose the meat. I usually dont mess with the rib meat so thats acceptable loss to me.

I like it in the crease of the shoulder, 1/3 to 1/2 the way up the animal on a pure broadside shot. As close to the scapula as you can get without actually hitting it. Really though, as long as the animal is dead I'm happy.

Haven’t seen the big guy this morning but did see a nice little 6 I’ve had on my camera for a few months now. Maybe he’ll make it to next year and grow a little.
