Speaking of SAS, how loud do we have to bitch to Toyota to get the solid axle in the front back? It's a truck, and it's ok to ride like a truck.

 

I think for a lot of years Toyota didn't have much competition in the segment, so there wasn't much choice. I think the competition is good but I wonder if Toyota and really all the manufacturers are missing the point. The reason the S10, Ranger, Hilux/Pickup existed in the first place was people wanted a smaller, cheaper truck than a 1500/F150 that was easier on gas. Now owning my Taco I'm not sure I see the advantage of another when I can get a 1/2 ton Big 3 work truck that gets the same mileage, is more basic and isn't too much bigger. I think that's why Toyota is dropping SR and utility packages, because there really isn't any reason to get one.

 

You're just lucky it still has a live rear axle.

It seems that the chatter on 2018s recently is just people complaining about drum brakes.

If you're going to complain, do it right. Complain about the lack or power or lackluster MPG.

official details are already out, you just aren't looking hard enough. the only thing you can't do is build one on their website. all of the changes have been officially released.

 

Again, why are we talking about NEED in a $40k vehicle? A vehicle of that price (like almost all vehicles at any prices) SHOULD have four wheel disks. I'm not debating need. If all you care about is need, why buy a new truck at all, over an old used base-model truck that has nothing but the absolute necessities? I don't NEED a GPS in my truck when it's one my phone. I don't NEED an information center at all outside of basic gauges. It's not about NEED. It's about meeting expectations of a modern vehicle - in this case, one that's been standard in most cars for the past 30 years.

Seriously the very debate on here trying to justify drum brakes in 2017 is like I've entered the twilight zone...

On a side note, I'm genuinely curious what the average age demographic of the folks that are ok with drum brakes still. I'm gonna guess it's not far from the retirement home.

 

I resemble that remark! I'm 61 so one foot in the grave and one foot on a banana peel and rear drum brakes on my Taco are fine with me.

I don't care one way or the other myself, just curious in what way you'd expect to benefit in getting disc brakes? All of the other features you mentioned are luxuries or amenities that have a purpose. You seem to feel that whether disc brakes are an improvement or perform exactly the same, they need to be included just on principle. I mean I get it if you'd rather service disc brakes than drums; there's a lot less to deal with. I just don't understand why people are demanding disc brakes, like they can't get their trucks to stop as is.

I can't say that I understand why Toyota is using discs, I just don't see why it's such a big deal either way though. Maybe if I drove my truck the way I see other people flying down the interstate in theirs it would matter more to me. I'm 31 and want a truck to do truck things, regardless of the specific components used to do them.

 

Gee, I don't know, maybe better braking? The truck brakes ok now, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like added better braking with rear disks.

Likely because they are better and are expected on any vehicle made in the last 25-30 years.

Don't mind me, I'm one of the few who are upset at the discontinued I4 5MT trucks so I'm clearly not the guy Toyota is trying to build trucks for.

The Tacoma is lacking in a number of areas compared to the competition (and upcoming competition) and I get why that's a problem for people. For me, I'm not interested in most of the competition and wish Toyota would just stick to the basics.... even with that said, disc brakes are pretty damn basic.

Sales numbers don't seem to care....

 

The front brakes are small Brembo 4-pots, so if the price for excellent front brakes is rear drum brakes, count me in.

Of course I'm getting 22mpg in my 2017, have had no problems with it, but still considering trading in on a 2018 for the tailgate lock and TSS. In addition to starting with 15k less miles than my current has.

 

I thought some members reviewed the 2018 users manual and it still stated the tailgate lock was only operated with a physical key. Am I mistaken?

 

Later in 2017 it was listed as a dealer installed item, close enough for me. I guess I can ask my dealer about it while it is in, but somehow I suspect it will be more than the $279 option.
