How far can you drive with the front axle only?

Looking at getting a custom rear driveshaft done on my 2nd gen daily driver. How far can I drive in front wheel drive only if I need to drive my truck? Mostly around town but dont want to fry a tcase or diff.

 

If it's custom why do you need to remove the old one before you receive it?

Then you could just swap it.

Also if you needed to in 4h don’t go over 35-40 but do at your own risk and only if really needed

 

You could drive 70mph in 4H. It won’t hurt it

 

You can drive as long as you need. Just remember you’re on a smaller diff and CV axles, so I wouldn’t beat it hard. But just driving around you’ll be fine.

 

Oh, it must have been 4L then that I was reading about where the max speed was around 40

 

Probably. 40mph in 4L is screaming. My t-case is whining at 20mph. The manual says you’re even able to shift into 4H at 50 and below.

 

All the torque is being transmitted through the transfer case chain to the front driveline. It's fine to drive around in front wheel drive. Burn outs not recommended.

 

Wow. Idk I read so much about so many different things, I get stuff wrong all the time. Between the 60’s rail dragster stuff and a 4x4 plus Tacoma’s I get thing jumbled around a lot

 

Max speed for shifting into 4h is 40 but once in 4h you can go 50-60-70 no prob

On my old jeep I broke both driveshafts on the trail and used my high lift jack handle for the front D/shaft replacement . I then drove home 300 miles on the front axle only and had no problems

Front axle had a spool so fwy driving was slightly sketchy at best LOL !!

 

I thought the manual said 55. Once in 4wd drive as fast as you want.
