Haha I grew up with boats fresh and salt. My grandfather also had a 35' searay and my uncle had a 55' something. We just had an old proline 20' cuddy. I know enough about them to be dangerous, but yes. The motor going bad is a major concern of mine. I was looking for a 2000ish proline or grady with newer power.

this is simply only true due to the fact most people buy boats they cant afford.... and most all first time owners assume owning a boat is like owning a car...

I do gotta say, though I am not too into fishing myself at the moment, watching some of these people reel in mobys on kayaks and stand up paddle boards is very impressive.

While I prefer to catch fish. Even if I don't, there's nothing like being out on the beach in the early AM by myself in the peace and quiet. Or even in the river with my 7 yr old having a good time. It also gives me something to look forward to all week as I'm getting my ass handed to me over sales, etc. I'm too fat for the kayak though..

That's what I'm thinking. I know people with boats and to go out and fish on it (catch fish or not) I gotta throw them money for bait and fuel, and help clean the boat when we get back. It's expensive and time consuming and it's not even my boat! I'm gonna eventually get a little whaler but don't want a whole lotta boat to take care of..

I enjoyed my boat just not often enough to justify the costs. Slip fees got ridiculous.

This is my favorite kayak fishing video. Posted in 2009 wayyy before it got as popular as it is now. About the time I started myself.

I know almost nothing about boats, but what makes them so expensive to own? Assuming you have space on your property to store it, do they just eat gas? high maintenance motors? expensive parts? Just kinda curious, because like @uurx said, it almost seems as easy to own as a car to me :notsure:

the money just adds up really fast that is all, really really fast lol.... and it is a billion dollar industry, so one cant just assume a boat is a boat is a boat.
    big boats little boats
    motor boats sail boats
    diesel gas
    fresh water salt water
lakes rivers bays sounds deep oceans
    docking mooring trailering
shit man this is just a tip of the iceberg....

and don't forget, owning most boats means many times you need a small second boat... just cause boat life...

A small 23’ boat can have a 172 gallon tank and gets 5 mpg or so. Slip rental is about 1500 for the season depending on how close to the ocean you are. Shit breaks and it’s never easy to get to. Bend a prop and your looking at 800. And marina fuel always costs more than regular. Nothing is easy to work on or get to. You need to be flex Armstrong to get to a bilge pump. And most everything on there you really don’t want to break when your 30 miles offshore or even just going through the canal or inlet because you’ll be screwed. Plus an outboard is about 60% or more of the cost of the boat if your buying used. Painting the bottom, waxing...everything is exposed to salt water 24:7 Etc etc.

Freshwater small boat nbd, salt water bigger boat, hey $$$$$.

I proposed to my wife on this boat (her cousin's) and it's a relatively small boat. 2 V6 outboard's really your basic saltwater boat. It was almost $800 in gas every time they took it out, and that was 5+ years ago. I can't imagine it got cheaper. Then you have slip fees, maintenance, insurance, registration etc.

My uncle wanted me to move to Outer Banks NC 25 years ago and go into the boat repair businesses with him.Me being the worker and him being the business man.He wanted to be able to "go to the boat" instead of having them bring the boat to you. He said people would not mind paying extra instead of schlepping the boat to a shop.I think it was a great idea. But after installing to Oldsmobile 455's in his Egg Harbor.I quickly realized I was not a contortionist, and thought cars and garages with lifts was much better.
