40 Million Kidde brand fire extinguishers are affected. I checked my extinguishers out and one of them was on the list.

*EDIT* All of my Kidde Extinguishers were on the recall list. Boat, Garage, and Kitchen. You need to submit claims for each based on the category (plastic handle, push button, and Marine push button)

    https://kiddefxrecall.rsvpcomm.com/

So now what? Find all of your Kidde brand extinguishers and check model numbers by category (plastic handle, push button, and Marine Push Button). The confirmation I received stated they are sending the replacement unit in 15-20 days.

To save you time and effort, below are the direct verification links:

    USA:https://inmarmarketaction.com/kidde/Kidde284US/

    CANADA:https://inmarmarketaction.com/kidde/Kidde284CA/

    You will need to provide/do:

    1. Your name and shipping details (no proof of purchase needed)

    2. Model Number (on side of extinguisher)

    3. Serial Number (also on side of extinguisher)

    4. Don't throw away your old units. They may send instructions to follow on what to do with them.

Fingers crossed you don't have one on the recall list, but if you do hopefully this helps speed up getting a replacement. Good luck.

the crazy thing about this recall is that I read it affects models that were manufactured as far back as 1973...

You're right - its crazy. My extinguishers were all purchased at different times and are different models. All of them were on the list.

The date format they use was confusing the shit out of me, didn’t realize it’s a 0/365 format as DDD/365 then YY.

Edit: also based on their pdf and the date on my bottle, mine technically was made before Jan 2012 however when I entered date and my serial# it said it was affected so idk we will see if they ship a new one.

@JdevTac and others who are trying to get replacements, your date code is not a required field. I couldn't actually find it on one of mine, and tried to submit without it and then realized there wasn't a required asterisk next to it. Glad to hear its helping a few people!

Kidde has for years been denying that their plastic trigger mechanisms get brittle over time, and shear when depressed leaving you with a full can and no way to activate it. My Kidde extinguishers came with several purchases I made over the years.

According to the government's requirements of Kidde, the new replacements must use metal triggers and valve mechanisms, which would indicate a more reliable/durable mechanism.

According to the following PDF, you might have to return the recalled units:

    @pra4sno

Peeps will need a date code for the “Plastic Handle” models when you fill out the online submission. Use the last 5 digits of the stamped multiple digit code in back part of cylinder. The date code field in the form allows only five digits.

The “Pushbutton” models do not need a date code.

FYI: The date code does not even resemble any common date convention. It’s just a series of 5 numbers.

It’s DDD/365 for day of entire year and the YY as last 2 digits.
