I have my first warranty appointment scheduled to look at a few things I have noticed. Am I crazy or no? I have been reading a lot on the forum here and it seems I have a few of the same things other people have going on, so I'm well versed in the common things.

2017 DCSB TRD Off Road Auto with less than 800 miles now, I bought it with 12.

Here's the list I typed up for the technicians...

    1. - Front driver and passenger window tint has air bubbles

    2. - Paint protection film (3 of 4) on lower side of bed has air bubbles

    3. - Front black plastic chin piece broken/protruding on both ends. Due to license plate bracket being screwed in. Techs replaced chin piece once already, but it was made worse. Please replace chin piece but DO NOT install license plate bracket. I will be going with an aftermarket solution to fix this issue.

    4. - Transmission constantly hunting for gears on the highway, especially with wind, or when driving up a gentle slope.

    5. - Vehicle surges and lurches, but randomly. All instances happen when AC on, in the morning after cold start, and when the vehicle temp gauge is between cold and the first hash mark on the gauge. Vehicle is in drive, stopped and foot on the brake. Has happened over a dozen times but here are the most notable:

    A. I came to a stop sign and the vehicle surged forward the same time a person stopped behind me. My vehicle lurched forward so hard I thought the other person hit me from behind. I put it in park and got out to look at the damage but there was 2 feet of space between us.

    B. Pulled forward about 3 feet to clear my other vehicle to give my wife space to open the passenger door to get in. Vehicle surged forward while she was climbing in and she almost fell out onto the driveway.

    C. When parking vehicle in the garage, I got it in where I wanted it, but before I could put it in park the vehicle surged, almost causing me to hit the garage wall.

Please ensure transmission has latest software TSB performed, as well as a Manual/Visual fluid level check. These behaviors sound like low transmission fluid to me.

    6. – Vehicle randomly groans and shudders from the rear end when under moderate braking from 20-30 MPH to 0. Even further some of the time when it does this, when the vehicle’s inertia stops, there is a *CLUNK* sound that is heard and felt from the rear. Possible driveline binding? Or low differential fluid? Please check diff fluid levels.

    7. – When vehicle idles, with AC on and in park, every minute or so there is a significant jerk felt in the cab and rpms jump. AC compressor cycling? Is this normal behavior? When it happens, there is a significant jolt felt in the vehicle while the rpms dip 200 rpm then jump up 400 rpms or so. I have never experienced this in any vehicle before and it doesn’t seem normal.

So what do y'all think? Any suggestions for any of that other than what I think could be going on?

    Thanks TW

number 7 is somewhat accurate from my experiences. I have an MT so may be a little different here, but I do feel the AC compressor kick on and the truck jumps just a little and RPM's raise. I do not get the dip in RPM before it raises, however.

Thanks for the reply! Figured it was the compressor, just seeing if that was normal for this vehicle. This is vehicle number 11 for me and if never felt an AC compressor do that before, haha.

yeah, 7 is normal and is likely because the truck idles so low it has to make a big jump to kick on the compressor and that's what you're feeling. of all the issues you call out (many of which are real and I've experienced) this one isn't one I'd be concerned about.

get the transmission TSB done and mark your drain/fill holes on your transmission so you can verify they actually did a physical inspection. their go-to is to simply start it up, run tech stream and if it says transmission is good (temps, etc.,) they call it a day. the lurching is also quite common though there are certainly different levels of problems folks experience. when pulling into my garage I have to be very careful b/c i've had it try to lurch forward on me (and my hot water heater is at the end of my garage!) so hopefully I never see that day.

hope you get your stuff worked out, just print out your concerns and any applicable TSBs. I'd have them check your rear drums too for the braking issues - I had something similar and my issue was a warped drum they replaced under warranty.

Quit nitpicking everything and enjoy the truck. Like said before most of the problems you listed are normal characteristics of the third gens.

    1. Is likely a dealer option not a Toyota option. Factory windows are dyed not tinted.
    2. Another dealer provided option.
    3. this is wierd, license plate bracket should not affect this.

    4,5,6,7 are normal.

    I appreciate the constructive criticism.

Safety is not a normal characteristic.

What happens when I surge over a small child at a crosswalk? Or put a hole through the garage door?

5, A sounds like axle wrap. That's been going on since Tacomas of the 90's. You get so used to it, I never notice, but if someone is in my truck they ask what it was. It shifts forward at hard stops, then back when you get rolling.

Mine surges as well but I've never had any of the concerns you do. Looks like you need to learn how to use the brakes

Good luck. Have taken my truck to two dealers and both said the issues are normal characteristics of the tacoma.

Number 6 might be loose U-bolts. I would either get under there and toque them to 70ft-lbs or ask the shop to look.

I got the lurching for a little bit when I first got the truck. The brake issue is weird. I hear noise coming from brakes but it doesn't seem out of the ordinary? Hard to tell really. 4 and 7 are normal. I will say 10k seems to be the magic number for mileage. The transmission smoothed out a bit around then and the lurching completely stopped at around 4-5k (it never happened often, only once in a while). Also, someone correct me if i'm wrong, but don't they encourage really revving up the rpms for break in?

Anyways, good luck at the dealer.

    Thanks!

After the input from you all, I will remove 4 and 7 from my list.

That's why I asked you all here first.

    Thanks everyone.
