Nah. I let him walk in hopes of the big guy coming in. Only saw him and a doe this morning. He was within 10 yards of me for a few minutes. Could have taken him several times...but decided to pass.

I pass on stuff too, its funny if a nice buck comes in you dont even think twice and hope you dont get buck fever and mess up or even worse miss! Couple seasons ago I passed on a forker right behind him was a nice 8pt...not big but nice. Which I didnt think twice about passing, and I did shoot him with in 5 minutes of seeing him.

I’ve never been a trophy hunter by any means. Here, you can shoot one buck any size, then the next one has to be at least 4 on one side. I usually shoot a small buck early in the year. Im mainly on private property and the owner wants me to shoot whatever I can because they eat his crops in his field. But...I’ve been letting more walk the last couple years. I’ve already killed a doe with my bow this year. Could have shot that spike Sunday. Could have shot that 6 today. But...I kinda wanna see what they’re gonna look like in a year or two. If it’s late in the season and I’m out of meat and haven’t killed a buck yet, I’ll probably shoot whatever I see. I usually won’t shoot a doe after thanksgiving as most of them are bred and it would be like killing 2 deer.

I do hope that big one comes back in while either me or my dad are there. I need him on my wall.

    Heart lung shot.

Best not to risk wounding an animal because someone wants to pretend to be a sniper lol.

High shoulder hits do drop an animal in their tracks BUT will not fatally wound them if it goes between the lungs and spine. So they’ll drop for a few seconds and while your walking up to them they’ll get up and run away never to be found again.

I also prefer not to have an animal suffer so I don’t go neck shot. Didnt know people did that.

mostly older people do the neck shot, or if young person does it was taught by an older person. Its pretty instant death though, I just feel that if I miss the spinal cord its going to run off so I typically shoot for heart/lungs. When I do a good heart lung shot with my bow the deer is usually dead in under a minute.

Yeah. Can’t imagine a neck shot with a bow.

I was only ever taught heart/lung shot by anyone who’s advised me on shot placement.

Texas heart shot is OK if its the only shot and your lugging a 375 LOL thats the only exception.

I think it’s interesting how different people were brought up differently with hunting. Like I guess a lot of people shoot spike bucks??
My grandfather would turn in his grave if I shot a spike lol

The neck/head shot is a great killer and or wounder of animals. I'm not a fan of it at all except under controlled conditions. I know a guy who swears the neck shot is the only shot to take. He lost two moose, two years in a row because his neck shot missed the spine. It was enough to stun the moose and drop it, but then they got up and ran off. I've seen people miss the brain and hit the jaw, resulting in a deer that just dies a miserable death of starvation.

The amount of meat wasted with a shoulder shot is nothing compared to a wounded and lost animal. I'm all about the highest percentage shot to ensure a killing shot.

Not flaming at all, but how is a spike different from any other buck? I'd much rather shoot a spike than a young 6 or 8 point. In my mind I slot limit my deer. I shoot old or young, but like to let the 2-3yr olds mature, unless they need to be taken out of the gene pool.

yeah theres a great possibility of missing. I myself wouldnt do a neck shot unless it was under ideal conditions and under 40yds with a rifle. I would never attempt a neck shot with a bow.

Heres my take, whats to say the next guy or gal is going to pass on a spike or whatever. Only if you are on a fenced, managed acreage does it really matter IMO. Sure you can say YOU will pass on it but doesnt mean the next person will.

Watched a yearling run into the side of a car in front of me yesterday. Poor little fella went about 10 feet in the air. I slammed on my brakes, tires squealing, to keep it from landing on my hood. It flopped around for about 10 seconds. I was about to get out and shoot it with my pistol, then it suddenly popped up and ran off

No flaming here either but I was always taught to not kill anything other than mature animals. I was taught that was proper game management. You don’t want to kill off all the young deer, especially bucks because you hurt the population of future trophy deer.

I got mad the first time my cousin shot an itty bitty 4 point lol. Poor thing didnt get to grow up to be anything.

awesome! I actually prefer doe meat vs buck. Depending on when its taken. Prior to the rut its great. During or after its not that great.
