AAL vs. Leafpack

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I can't seem to find a thread where it is discussed. My 2006 has the new leaf spring pack from the most recent Toyota recall. I now have a LEER cap on the truck, so my truck has lost the rake that it used to have that i liked. Obviously, it is even worse if i have passengers in my truck. I dont do very much offroading and i haul heavy-ish things from time to time. Since i have added the cap, i noticed my springs are basically sitting flat with no positive arch. Would it be beneficial to just get an AAL to get back that positive arch and rear rake of the truck? Or should i look into replacement leaf packs all together?

 

The problem is the shitty Toyota leafs. Even if you do an AAL, over time it can still sag. I had a 2" single AAL and towed a 26' toon once and I was sagging; that was after it was installed at 5k miles only. The AAL lasted another 3k before I said fuck it and got the Dakar leaf pack. Get a leaf pack. You won't regret it.

 

Agreed. The AAL is a great option for an unloaded truck that stays unloaded, but when you start adding weight they really drop off in performance. I also recommend a leaf pack.

 

That makes sense. The only reason i was hesitant on the leaf pack was i'm not looking to really lift the entire truck's ride height, but some of the leaf packs i'm finding offer the same amount of lift as the AAL options.

 

If you're only looking for load carrying capacity, check out firestone air bags. They're cheaper than a full leaf pack and will help a whole lot with sag.

 

well, just with the cap the truck is in a constant sag, so i'm thinking with one of the leafpacks that promote 1.5 -2" of lift, it should put the truck where i want it. Or, i can adjust slightly with some 5100s up front.

 

Which leafpacks promote that? As far as I know the dakars and all pros are 3" lift unloaded.

 

Dakars are 2.75"

 

I thought wheelers were advertised at something like 2". I could be wrong.

 

Same difference. 1/4" is negligible and still more than OP is hoping for.

Go with a full leaf pack if you can, I have the 3 leaf AAL from Headstrong (same as the Icon 3 leaf) and it looks great but rides super stiff.

 

The lift is from stock with no sag, so it won’t lift your sagging truck to stock levels since your replacing the leaf pack. With Dakar’s you should be sitting at about 24-24 1/4 with a shell (hub to fender measurements). So you will have a lot of rake and will most likely want to lift the front 2-2.5in to compensate.

 

so there are no options available if i want to replace my flat leaf springs but not want to get more than an inch or so of lift?

 

That's what the air bags are for like I recommended earlier. You can constantly change it depending on your load.

 

I might have read wrong during my research, but i thought it wasnt good to leave those things aired up all the time?
