Just wanted to update that two tents are still available, both black shells and either grey or green fabric

So last weekend I got to spend my first night in this tent. For anybody still on the fence, get on the purchase side. This thing was great. I came from a CVT Mt. Shasta, and yes it was way roomier, but I'm a solo person so this hardshell was great.

Overall, comfort was fantastic. I liked the mattress better and the quilting seemed to provide better insulation than what the Shasta did. I have a Mr Heater Little Buddy I ran for about 5-10minutes when I first got into the tent to take the chill out of things (it got below freezing in Kentucky), then climbed into my sleeping bag (underwear only) and slept like a baby, warm all night. Woke up a couple times and felt the canvas of the tent and the quilting and it had a slightly cool touch to it but not bad at all. When I woke up I turned the little heater on for about 10 minutes again to warm everything up and had my clothes hanging on the hooks to get warm too. It was great.

My only complaints are this: first is the "flaps" to get into the tent. You have a mesh screen, and a canvas flap. Well the canvas doesn't seal on the bottom it just kinda lays there, no zipper along the bottom or anything. If that was zippered off the tent would let little to no air in at all. That canvas portion is also your awning, so if you have it as an awning out, you don't have a solid "door" anymore just a mesh screen. I just wish there were 3 layers to the door, just a personal desire/complaint lol.

second is just the way the tent sits on my cab rack too because it's longer. if I didn't have a front prinsu it would be no issue. with the bed articulation I was getting squeaks and knocks and all kinds of noises on the trails this weekend. I'm going to figure out a better spacer option on the shell rack to raise the tent over the front rack so this doesn't happen anymore.

so other than my 2 personal issues (nothing really against the tent), that's my first review of it.

    I give it a 4.9 out of 5 lol.

edit: apparently the other tents only have a mesh and canvas flap on the "door" and the canvas portion doesn't zip on the bottom either, guess I forgot that with the Shasta and just miss having the large awning overhang for privacy lol.

So the flap doors over the mesh are like the other RTTs in that there are zippers on each side, stitched across the top, and semi-ridgid (teehee) across the bottom?

Edit: was super jelly when you pulled into the space next to me and was set up in 30 fucking seconds. :luvya:

great to hear! i opened mine but havent had a chance to use it. i need to space it up off the rails a tiny bit to prevent buffeting on the side prinsu rails (cab mount). but i have an easy solution for that, just cut some rubber sheeting to fit under the tent/above the rails then clamp it down.

they are zippered on the sides, stitched on top, and seem to have a metal rod? (teehee) on the bottom that gives it the weight to stay down. it also Velcros on the sides outside of the zipper. it just simply does not attach at the bottom.

I just know with that shasta that I sold you, you have the large overhang awning above the door (maybe because it's the extended version?) then the actual door has two flaps of it's own 1 mesh, 1 canvas, and they both zip along the bottom right?

oh rubber sheeting I hadn't even thought about that. I was thinking stupidly and just like some thin plywood strips under the tent above the prinsu rails. just gotta make sure to lift it a little but not farther than the hardware can still work.

Yes...even the non-extended version has the fly that covers the door. The mesh flap zips all the way around but the canvas flap only zips on either side and also has a rod inserted (teehee) to weigh it down. No zipper across the bottom.

hm ok then, maybe I just miss having the big awning lol. I'm just thinking on warm or rainy days when I want the awning out and open I have no privacy door left lol.

lol I just never rolled the "door" to the shasta up because it has the big awning, so always felt privacy. ignore my earlier complaint haha

yup thays my plan. i was going to make it so itd cover the entire tent bottom and just cut around where the hardware needs to go for the rails. keep it 1pc, this way the tent is still entirely supported and it cant come out

hm, I guess a piece of plywood with cutouts would be good for that extra support too.

So I’ve been thinking of a way to get the door sealed. The only other tent I’ve found that has a completely closed door would be JB. They use a large Velcro strip at the bottom to seal the door. Only one issue is their ladder mounts to the side of the tent vs hooks over the door lip.

Can someone take a picture of the door opening, I’ll try to get some different ideas together

true! the ladder does lay inside the door flap. I'm willing to bet when we space it up on the prinsu that you can slide the ladder mount between the tent and prinsu.

    This makes me jelly.

But from reading the other comments after this... sounds like you could possible create your third door or something so that you can have the awning out and then have the third door for privacy.

Maybe some good two sided velcro so that it could just velcro up to the top and have a rod (teehee) on the bottom to keep down.

the (teehee)'s are making me lol at work. I'm sure there is a way to make a "3rd door" flap, seeing as how all tents seem to be this way? would love a door AND the awning.

Yea, I bet it would work. Does the canvas go all the way to the top of the roof of the RTT? If not, pretty sure could easily make a 3rd door work pretty well. Or of there is a way to put a piece of paracord from one side to the other side so that it could just slide open and closed if that makes sense? Would be nice to be able to do that instead of just an open or close option.

If only I had one of these and I could design something up.... ha.

you should buy one, looks like there are 2 slots left :boink:

iirc the canvas does go all the way to the top, so the "3rd door" would need to be between the awning flap and the mesh door. a sliding door would be TITS
