What do you guys wear in your stands? Belt? Harness?

2 people fell from 25-30 feet around here this week. One died. The other didn’t technically fall the whole way. He fell backward and his foot got caught in the top part of his stand. He broke his leg and hung upside down for 6 hours. They said it was a miracle he didn’t have a stroke from hanging that long upside down. By the time his wife got to the hospital (about an hour away from her house) his face was still blood red. She said it scared her to death.

I use a harness in a ladder stand. I just bought a safety rope which I’ll use with a prusik knot to keep me rigged up as I climb up and down.

Most game management specifically target younger bucks/bulls for removal and protect the middle aged animals. There are more 1yr olds than 3 yr olds. If you want more 5 yr olds, you shoot more 1yr olds and less 3yr olds. Many hunts have a spike/fork quota and then a mature quota while protecting those in the middle.

Just like shooting does. In most states, there are not enough does being shot so the limits are fairly high. Older hunters refuse to shoot them because they weren't allowed to when they started hunting.

it's starts for me tomorrow morning. @wilcam47 I'm in your area now. Tomorrow evening I'll be going through a few thousand game camera pics LOL. Fresh snow means easier tracking too.

If you want super cheap I'd learn how to tie a swiss seat (get good instruction, don't get hurt because of google and some dumb climber on the internet. More expensive, find an ultralight alpine harness. It'll weigh nothing but more than protect you in a fall.

Also make sure you're either on something stretchy, short, or that can elongate so it can absorb a fall without hurting you. I like a purcell prusik (http://www.bluugnome.com/cyn_how-to/gear/purcell-prusik/Prusik9.jpg) personally. I use 2 of them so I can always be tied in. They're super strong, cheap and you can tie it yourself (again don't wing it, make sure its done right).

I've also never been in a tree stand but I've been on plenty of tiny ledges waayyy up in the air.

I would also agree with the neck shot. Neck meat is harder to get all the shit out of when butchering, I try not to waste good front quarters or ribs unless it's more than 200 yards out, then just looking for a clean kill.

I think I’m going for a harness. Seems like it would be better on your spine in a fall.

But honestly I’m scared to death to go in a stand right now (said it in the archery thread, my cousin fell about two weeks ago — scary shit).

Use a harness you'll never fall or have any reason to worry.. UNLESS it gets windy!!

    I wear a belt. But I think I’m gonna get a harness.

It doesn’t scare me at all to climb. I’m not in a ladder stand, either. It’s a climber. Had a couple close calls going up or coming down, but it still doesn’t bother me to climb.

I had a weird one when I was in MD. I was maybe about 10'-12' up and was heading up further. when I go to move my harness thats around the tree up so I can move the climber up the whole climber and me sink down the bottom. I prob dropped 5-6' somehow I didnt fall, and the harness didnt get hung up as I went straight down. Took me a few seconds to regroup and back up slowly I went!
