after lurking around so long i finally decided to sign up, and start posting.

im big toyota fan, like most here. but no vehicle is perfect, that is why im here. my first yota was a 92 rwd pickup. loved every bit of it, but mostly of how much it kept giving back with putting such little in.

anyway ive since upgraded to an '05 along with 4 wheel drive. every vehicle ive owned as been manual so i figured why not keep the trend going and add an extra gear. seemed pretty exciting until i realized it would be impossible to get used the clutch on a 2nd gen toyota, along with the classic chirp of the TOB.

everyone seems to complain about the chirp/noise on the forums but no one seems to mention how bad the clutch constantly feels and acts day to day.

ive read all the posts and considered URD's fix and slave cylinder kits. ill be starting to fix part by part until i get a resolve im happy with regardless of a chirp. cause at this point the chirp doesnt bother me as much as the marshmallow clutch i keep driving even after replacing TOB's.

wish me luck! thanks for having me.

mmmmh coronas go best with tacos:) first I will fix the marshmallow clutch and if the chirp doesn't return then I know I got something that works.

after my first clutch/tob replacement the truck felt like it should. clutch popped nice and had a distinct engage spot on pedal travel. after about a month and a 1200km trip, chirp came back and the clutch went to marshmallow town soon after. impossible to engage and shift smoothly. certain days it feels ok depending on my mood.

Mine has the chirp with a clutch about 10k miles ago. Sometimes I'm literally stuck in or out of gear. Never going fast, but sometimes won't pop out of reverse, 1st, etc.

    i had a 1st gen 5-speed that was a badass little truck.

my 2nd gen is my first auto. i went that route after researching the 6-speed mtx. nobody had anything nice to say about it except the diehards. and they believe all auto drivers should relinquish their man cards.

Have you done anything yet? I'm in the same boat just without the churp. Sticks in gear when stopped or moving real slow, sometimes won't engage smoothly when trying to shift. I HATE this stupid manual and weak clutch.
My best results in my searching is URD stage 2 clutch, heavy flywheel and fix-U tb.

I'm back! was waiting a while for parts that were back ordered. and sadly my iPhone's camera isn't focusing! so pics cant happen at the moment.

I'm not sure what gear sticking issue you guys talk about. but I've had similar problem trying to get into first at a stop. that is normal, along with any motorcycle you'll ride. rocking the bike back and forward will let you engage, but tougher in a truck obv....

anyway! parts came and I was excited to see the difference between the stock and tsb support, release.

    old (31236-35050)
    new (31236-60060)

the replacement support is definitely longer. I think this is the part that really makes the tsb worth it.

also got the slave rebuild kit with stiffer spring, and longer push rod.

wish I had pics to show, but when I start digging into this project I'll update this post or make a new one!!

    thanks for the interest everyone!!

you can fix the 1st gear being stuck (sometimes reverse) or being hard to engage by double clutching, or engaging 2nd, then first. That will usually get everything lined up nicely.

Good luck @dirtydueck ! thankfully i have a first gen taco, and my clutch is ultra old school haha

wow update after 6 years, i bought a house 5 years ago and only got around to this now. still have my 356,000 km tacoma and just fixed this clutch issue. forget about the TOB. if any vehicle is a testimony about this issue, let it be mine. my last clutch/tob job was approx 150,000 kms ago.

it’s the damn accumulator and slave cylinder. delete that damn accumulator and get the upgrade kit with stiffer spring, and longer rod. my clutch feels and sounds brand new. faint chirp but i can barely hear my engine running now compared to before. clutch action feels awesome in every single aspect. surprised how many little quirks this has fixed. case closed.

my accumulator started to leak, new 50” brake line bent from slave to flex hose. cancel all your weekend plans and just do it.
