aftermarket headlight sealing

I ordered some aftermarket headlights to replace my old ones, reading about how the aftermarkets usually leak I decided to goto Walmart and pick up some silicone. however I wasn't sure which would be the best.

Ive pulled apart and reassembled maybe a dozen... always used ge silicone ii on the outside seam.

Take ALL bulbs out. Run a bead along the 2 halves, find a plastic grocery bag. Rip a strip off the bag, double wrap it over your index and middle finger. Then push the bead of silicone into the seam. You can see the silicone work its way into the seam.

Leave the bulbs out for 24hrs if you can, this will allow the silicone to offgas cleanly. If you put the bulbs back in too soon, you will get a haze developing INSIDE the light housings. Not ideal.

 

Also know some aftermarket housings have subpar optics, and also the clearcoat INSIDE the lens may stsrt to flake and peel within a year.

I cant recall the best aftermarket to use, i always used oem for myself.
List the manufacturer here, and someone may be able to tell you if they have had any issues with them.

 

Roger that, they should be here tomorrow, when I get off work ill silicone them the way you said and then Saturday ill install them, if these fill up with water I give up haha..makes my second set...first ones were my own fault I got cheap ebay ones.

I wanted my headlight assemblies blacked out but didn't want to go through the time and aggravation of taking the factory ones apart and painting. Also, would I need to apply any kind of sealant to these assemblies?

 

I may be wrong, but isnt that close to the cost of oem EMPTY housings?
Toyota has a part# with and without bulbs.

The 09 or 10 came with a smoked option for the trd sports.... did you 12+ guys have that option?

 

I looked up the OEM headlamp assemblies and they run around $200/assembly.

 

got them drying now I silicone and pushed the silicone the best I could in to the seams, then went over again with another line and left it on top...I'm gonna put the assembly in sunday to give the silicone a full 24 hrs to dry.....I forgot how messy the silicone gets haha its not pretty but its all going to be hidden once theyre installed. ill be putting the headlight itself in and then getting everything else situated....will post pics Monday night after work if all goes well!

 

Mark existing hotspots on a wall, then u have a rough estimate on how to aim your new lights.

Fine tune from there.

quick question, I see there are 2 knobs to adjust which does which...this is a projector headlight, since there is no highbeam in an H1 which knob will I use? theyre kind of in a weird spot once theyre installed because I noticed them in my others.
