I think @The hammer has used the 75w90 Mobil1 with good results in his truck I think others used 75w140 which is real thick

Mr. CookieMonster while I agree with some of what you are saying, I have to point out that the consumer does not enjoy the same protection for a defective product simply because the manufacture of the truck does not want to have a huge number of 40k vehicles returned because they have an annoying noise issue, but a retailer is less likely to pitch a fit over a 300 dollar tv. Both of which may be under warranty when the condition presents itself. The consumer is at the mercy of the dealer and the manufacture does not compensate the dealer as well on warranty work, which in itself is an incentive for the dealer to not do the work and deny the issue is a problem. The manufacture holds all the aces. They don't write lemon laws for tvs, but they do for vehicles. Why? because the manufacture has the upper hand when it forces the consumer to present the issue as a problem and most likely has to go through an arbitration process. That is why they offer all the fine print at time of purchase. I had numerous issues when I purchased my taco, failed adhesive on hood, kazoo effect on drivers window because of bad weather stripping, howling control arms, 1 quart low tranny fluid, u bolts not torqued to spec. and a defective differential. Fortunately I had a dealer that went to bat for me and fixed each and every issue and my differential was noisy over all speeds not just the 50 to 60 range. After the replacement I have no noise after 2500 miles of use. The problem can be repaired. It really requires a good Tech that recognizes the issue and takes the time to repair it properly. I did not make a stink about the issue. I was well taken care of even though it took weeks to get it resolved. The dealer I find to be the link that can make or break the result. I must add I received a 8 year platinum warranty for my troubles as well and I did not have to argue for it. I did tell them that the warranty is only as good as those willing to honor it. I also told them although I had purchased with cash 4 Toyota s prior to this one don't mistake that as loyalty and if the product becomes more of problem than it should I will go else where and I did. We decided to not purchase another Toyota for my wife and went with a Ford instead and it has had no issues after a 8 months of use. I informed Toyota after the purchase of the Ford as to the reason why. I told them that this will likely be my last Toyota if they do not honor the warranty. Right now the Taco is doing just fine and hopefully it remains that way. Otherwise I will be trading it for a Ford Ranger. I really don't enjoy having to leave my truck for weeks on end while the manufacture decides whether or not it is recall or warranty and not have sufficient parts in process to speedily repair a 6 hour job. Your points are well taken and I respect your opinion.

Is this problem limited to certain differentials? I have not heard of any 4cyl truck with differential issues.
I have the 4 cyl 5 speed and my whole drive train is quiet as a mouse. I was under the impression that the 4 cyl manuals used the same differential as the V6 automatics because they have the same final drive ratios as reported on the Toyota PDS.
I do have 80w90 Super tech in mine though. It was pretty thick pumping it in compared to the oil I drained out. I put it in as a cheap flushing oil at 5000 miles, then I read about all these problems with differentials and decided to leave it in. Did not effect gas mileage. I am at 20k now.
I thought truck differentials was known science. Did Toyota try to re-invent the wheel? Gear oil to thin? Hell, the differentials in those "truck bed trailers" you see being dragged down the road seem to have more reliable diffs than these and they probably had their last oil change in 1980.

I appreciate this. I contacted the dealership where I purchased it from asking them about a trade in. They claimed since I made a bad review and filed a case with corporate that they couldn't communicate with me Ha. Can't make this stuff up. I said it doesn't work that way. My father is a lawyer, I grew up with this in the household. I'm not a plaintiff and never filed a suit. Ha.

" we didn't make the vehicle" was their excuse. If I trade it in elsewhere, i'll loose 6k in the ordeal. But the insane MSRP and trade in value maybe worth the loss. Chevy said they'd be able to work with me. Not sure what their offer is.

To me a buy back would make the most sense. We'll see. Oh and shifter knob came loose today. Fun stuff..

that's a good question why does the 4 cylinder rear diff operates as quite as a church mouse but the v6 model supposedly howls like a banshee, its the same exact part? From what Ive read Walmart super tech gear oil is very good and a lot of FJ owners are using the Super Tech 75w90 semi synthetic as a replacement for the factory 75w85 stuff, with great success. heres a couple of comparisons of the 75w85 Redline gear oil versus other weights it shows that the Lightweight 75w85 oil doesn't have the higher viscosity protection at the higher temperatures as the 75w90++ oils do.https://www.redlineoil.com/content/files/tech/Gear% 20Lube%20PDS%2010-14.pdf https://www.redlineoil.com/content/files/tech/Gear Oil Tech Info.pdf

Different gear ratio (i.e. not the same parts) would be my guess.

After watching the 2nd & 3rd gen Ike Gauntlet videos, the Honda Ridgeline came up...it's worth watching. I was surprised that Honda's not-a-truck did as well as trucks. Though, I still wouldn't buy the ridgeline...

Mike Bafan, President of Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Baja California, announced the firm will undergo a $150 million expansion to boost its Tacoma production by more than 60,000 units annually.

The announcement took place at Toyota´s plant in Tijuana in front of industry leaders, city and state government representatives, and TMMBC´s staff.

I never see Ridglines around here. I wonder how many they sell each quarter/year. I’d buy a Pilot before the Ridgline, at least you’d have covered area and hunting gear room, same 4wd, engine, & such.

Lots of people like putting things in a bed instead of inside

I rather have my tacoma than a 4Runner any day

Tacoma all day long. I can’t think of any reason for me to buy a 4Runner.

Does the howl bother people that much?

I started hearing the howl around 5000 miles. At 10,000 miles I still hear and I don't care about it.

Glad to hear they are replacing it! I have a claim opened up on mine because they have refused to replace the gasket even though it has been addressed twice and taken in 3 time and they have cleaned it off but a couple "wet" spots have popped back up Would of saved everyone time and money if they would just of done it right the first time I took it is. I need to call my Case Manager back but have been putting it off since because frankly I'm sick of dealing with them.
