I feel your pain. 2 interviews, both went very well. Was told I was their 1st choice. Then they decided to promote someone within the company.

I don't understand why these companies feel the need to waste our time...

I feel I'd have a hard time getting a good job in IT. I don't interview well.

It's mainly to keep lawyers at bay, showing that the job posting was unbiased and allowed all people the opportunity to apply. Not only does it waste your time, but the company has to spend hours on X amount of mandatory useless interviews.

Quick documentation question: can someone give me a useful antonym for 'host server'? For example, I have files on the host and I send those files to another server... what would I call that second server? Recipient server sounds not quite right, but I'm really drawing a blank this morning. Maybe it really is 'client server', but that doesn't feel right either...?

I started half time and was made full time after a year. But, they had to follow the process so they sent me a termination letter and posted the new position, which I had to apply for.

I remember feeling really bad because they interviewed a guy before me and I saw him out in the hallway. He was talking to one of the people in the group that interviewed him about how much he would love the job and he was dressed in a full suit.

Little did he know, the guy who walked past him in shorts and a t-shirt was only going into the "interview" as a formality and for all intents and purposes I already had the job.

This one belongs in the stupid user category -
    kidding me.jpg

Get a call from the local police department saying they have recovered some of our computers and did we want to pick them up? So I go down to their office and this is on the bottom of one of them. To protect the stupid I've redacted the url's, usernames, and passwords that literally covered these post-it notes taped to the bottom of the computer. It was a sweet collection of personal and work related credentials.

we use Samung Galaxy phones for our Corporate issued devices, i see this all the time. Our phones are required to have a pin or pattern set per our MDM and i'm constantly having to tell people "Don't put a label with the pin number on the back".

People get mad at me because I have a GPO set to lock computers that are idle for a certain amount of time. I was really generous and I think it's a half hour. They complain it's inconvenient. The ones who deal with the most confidential data complain the most.

So, you're telling me you leave your computer unattended for a half hour and don't lock it? Thanks for confirming that I set that policy for a reason and making me wonder if I should set that time even lower.

There is a fine balance between security and usability.

In our environment, if you're computer has been idle that long, then you're either in a meeting or stepped away. We deal with SSN's and financials so 10mins is really acceptable. We had one guy fired for fraud. What if he hopped on someone else's computer and committed said fraud on their dime. It a serious concern.
Yeah, I won't be getting that computer back for at least a year.

I amend my statement to also include environment.

In your case I agree 10min is reasonable. Like everything context is important but the way the conversation was going it sounded more like people were just jocking for who is the bigger IT asshole.

I'd rather re-enter a password every ten minutes, than need to explain to my boss how the machine was so easily compromised.

Even at home, I'm in the habit of locking my machine if I think I'm stepping away for more than several minutes.

I lock mine even if I'm stepping away from my desk for 30 seconds. Takes two seconds to unlock, so I don't see the big deal.

I think my 30 minute window is very generous, and it's amazing to me that people still complain about that.
