    You want performance or sound?

If you're after mainly the latter, then just try getting your stock muffler swapped for a hi flow item.

I put a 2.5" offset/offset hi flow muffler in my Hilux (same engine as yours) and it sounds pretty damn good.

Your goals/plans will determine what you need to get.

If you are going to get a supercharger- Then you need to do that and then build exhaust to match what you want.
If you are going to stay naturally aspirated: Get an upgraded muffler welded into the stock pipe system.
For better performance: Dynomax Super Turbo
    For better sound: Flowmasters

to tell ya the truth there isn't much increase in gas milage or hp! Well at least I haven't noticed

Smaller motors need back pressure, if you open them up you decrease the back pressure. This causes you to actually lose hp and gas mileage. With a V-6, I would just put on a hi flow muffler (I like flowmaster because of the sound) and leave everything else stock. Cat back systems for our trucks are a huge waste of money. New muffler and new tip, for looks, and be done with it. It will sound good.

2-stroke motors "need" back pressure. 4-stroke needs efficient scavenging, in which back pressure only plays a small role.

Put a 5" exhaust on a 4 cyl and then come talk to me.

    ok...

So tell me.. is it because of little backpressure or is it because the large volume of the piping has cooled the gas, which in turns slows down the exhaust velocity to the point that the exhaust scavenging pulse is no longer doing its job?

What about a straight pipe 2" exhaust on that 4 cyl? it will have 0 back pressure. Will that still lose power? Why? ;)

Magnaflow is what you want. Nice mellow tone. Not too loud, and not too quiet. When you floor it it will sound even better.

Just taking the muffler out does not give you zero back pressure.

Bigger is not always better when it comes to exhaust. Depending upon the variables of the engine components, more back-pressure/restriction may be needed to achieve optimum exhaust velocity.

In High performance situations, bigger exhaust usually is better because even though larger in diameter, the exhaust maintains enough velocity. But, in smaller & less powerful motors, you need to find the right balance between free -systems and restrictive systems in order to maintain optimum velocity in the RPM band that you make power in (lower RPMS usually).

But putting a Flowmaster muffler into your rig makes TONS of backpressure. Flowmaster is a "high flow" muffler with tons of baffling to make the great sound.
Dyno sheets have been posted in the past to prove a LOSS of HP/TQ with Flowcrapsters. If sound is your thing- Go for it. But don't try to lecture about performance if you are backing Flowmaster,
