I wanted a rare configuration in my parts - the 4x4 4cyl 5 speed with convenience package. There weren't any close by so I put a refundable deposit on one of the last 2017s being made, due to be delivered in a few weeks. Supposedly they discontinued these for 2018.

The thing is I tried haggling and showed him one just like it up north for 1000 less, and he told me to just go get it, he can't possibly match the price on an order. I thought about it for a few minutes and decided fuck it, I'll put up the refundable deposit and decide what to do later.

The one up north is still there. It has a couple hundred miles on it from test drives and I'm trying to avoid renting a car and making the trip up there. But I feel like I should do anything I can to save a thousand bucks. But I want mine with 0 miles on it! I keep thinking some asshole probably redlined it already.

thought you were supposed to negotiate before ordering it..

how far north is the other one? only $1000 less may not be worth the ride if its too far.

Should have worked price before the order, doubt they will move much until you request your deposit back. But if you do that be sure your willing to go get the other one. Is this the dealership you will use for service? Might not be worth screwing with them.

Yeah I tried to negotiate before ordering, that was the best I could get from him. He literally told me to drive up and get the other truck. I decided to go ahead and put up the deposit because it would be enough trouble to go to get the other truck to offset my savings, plus the test drive mileage on the one up north. It's not that far it's about 200 miles. But I have to rent a car and spend my Saturday or Sunday driving.

And yes this would probably be my service dealership

Keep checking in on it, when gets there maybe walk away and say that you want to think about it. That might get you a few more bucks, but that's about it.

If you are horrified by the thought that someone exceeded the recommended break-in RPMs on the other truck, the extra $1000 is worth it for peace of mind.

However, it's a completely unfounded scenario.
    1. Why in the world would anyone go drive a 4500 lb. 4 cylinder ungainly pickup truck and drive it like it's a race car?
    2. Even if they did...so what? Most people are way to cautious about break-in parameters, varying the load aids in the process, babying it is just as bad.
    3. It's your choice, if you have a problem with either go with what you are comfortable with.

Didn't you already go thru all this nonsense once?

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-sr-2-7-4x4-5-speed.516273/

A 0 miles on the if I vs a couple hundred miles on the odo for $1000.

As soon as it's titled in you name and driven off the lot which will mean more?

If you're not paying cash, figure out the value of that 1k over the life of your loan.

Not unfounded. I work in the transportation industry. Time is money when moving vehicles. Getting them to the ship and onto the ship, getting them off the ship to their spot in the lot, getting them to the car haulers or rail cars. The faster they go the more they can get done and the sooner they go home. The drivers get paid for an 8 hour shift even if they get the job done in four. It's a safe bet that most new cars on the lot have already been at their red line, even if they've only got a couple of miles on them.

400 mile round trip to save a thousand doesn’t make much sense to me, then rent a car on top of that.

Yeah, that's not what I meant. My position is that it's unfounded to worry yourself sick over the thought that the engine may have exceeded some ridiculous factory break-in limitation. Putting a load on the engine then running at low load is good break-in.

As far as the retards loading and unloading freight, start the engine and flooring it before the oil pressure comes up does far more damage than red lining it.

Fair enough, but how can you say with certainty that it doesn't make the difference between 200k mile engine and a 400k one?

I think it's pretty likely that somebody would drive one of these hard on the test drive, to see how much power they can wring out of it

I'll probably just suck it up and pay the price agreed upon.

They have zero incentive to negotiate for the exact truck you want once it is on their lot.

They know you want it and won’t walk away, because it’ll be right in front of you. Negotiating time was before the order was placed, I’m sure you understand why.

Good luck. Enjoy the new truck.

You seem pretty wound up over this for a stoner.
Sometimes, if you want something bad enough, you have to pay a premium for it.
    That’s just life.

I don't know, I see a lot of talk about playing dealers against each other for the best price. I'm not a total asshole but I want to make sure I don't pay more than I have to. I don't have any new car buying experience.

A thousand bucks can buy me a lot of dabs

Anyway I'm done I'll just pay the full price, now I feel bad for asking :smash:

You ordered a truck for an agreed price. Deal is done. You might qualify for a Toyota sale on that if you end up buying when there is a promo on, but seriously, pay it and get on with life.

A few listed in the signature
400 miles. That's at least 400/60... 6.6 hrs of driving assuming 60 mph. For $1000 plus mileage on the truck already up north it is an easy answer. Plus you're going to lose negotiating power soon. That model is being discontinued in 2018 so they could probably stay put and find someone that really wants it.

Good call if you just stick to your word on this one. I drove 240 miles each way to get mine; however my deal was no documentation fee of $650, 2000 off the sticker price, $10500 for my trade in when I was offered $8000 locally. Time is money but at $5100 difference and a mini vacation in wine country without having to pay accommodations it was an easy
