I'm not a union rig dude, but have to do stuff for them on site sometimes, mostly I build everything in my shop.
The guy that owns showrigg is a cool dude, he gives me odd jobs that need attention to detail, his guys don't have the same tolerances I do. But, just like everything in this industry, they need it yesterday. I guarantee tomorrow morning my phone will start ringing with ridiculous requests for sema.

Now I remember about the welding table. I sold a bunch of gas cylinders to someone on tacomaworld, but don't remember his name, he had a red access cab all long traveled out. Still have that welding bench and have been building a 20' long, 8' wide jig table. Going to have 3/4" top, Blanchard ground with jig holes in it when I'm done, I only work on it when I have time, and I don't have any time. I have been buying a new machine for the shop every month, next I am getting a mill . I am looking for a someone that can Tig weld aluminum and is a certified structural welder, but in my shop, you need to be able to do everything, that includes woodwork all the way to driving a 26' box truck, if you know anyone, let me know.
    Cheers.

IMG_2404.jpg IMG_2430.jpg Built a wire rope rack recently for the shop, this thing is heavy duty, all .250 thick material.
Next up is getting ready to fab some frames that will hold LED tiles that form a video wall, the tiles had to be a exact distance off the truss and hang down a specific distances below a stage. Hoping to double my square footage soon, when you start mocking stuff up, space becomes a premium.

Notice all the gaff tape on the truss, my notes and lego number system for the riggers who have to put everything together. I save them lots of time by doing this.

Neither. Structural 1.1. no arc welding or flux core in this industry. Structural 1.1 will require a 6010 or 7018 verticle and horizontal test, but again, not used in this industry.

I rarely change my settings. It seems I change my welding technique first. Thinking about this, it must be subconscious at this point. Your ears and eyes tell your hands what needs to change to make good welds.

One of the 1st things taught is to relax. This involves your mind set as well. try not to concentrate so hard that you give yourself a headache.

Right on man! Very cool. Yeah man! That’s the nature of the industry. Get it done fast!! If you look in my picture, there is a bunch of ladder truss that was rigged off of the studio beams and the idiots who installed it like 8 years ago have rigged it probably the worst I’ve ever seen. 75 percent of the shackles for the steel cables were side loaded and it was just terrible. Rumor has it, they suspended a car from the ladder truss for a car commercial o_O

Anyways. About 3 days into rigging this we noticed the horrible rig above what we were rigging and we had to take down all of ours so that we could access the stuff above to reinforce it after we got a studio engineer to come in and look at it. Needless to say the Unit Production Manager for the show wasn’t thrilled that we had to take 3 extra days to take down our stuff, reinforce the stuff above, and put ours back up haha.

That sounds like a dope new welding table!!

I will definitely keep an eye out for you for someone like that. Where is your shop at?

Everything we do is engineered and stamped, and usually what ever venue it's in has there own in house engineer . The guys I do everything for are the kingpins in the rigging industry and they are on site at all times.

Are you a 720 local ? Vegas is the rigging capital, lots of old school riggers here.

This week I built a ton of apple boxes for all the rigging hardware, shackles, turnbuckles, gac IMG_2610.jpg flex, chezboroughs etc. it's a ton of stuff and I probably need to still make just as many boxes as I did in this run.

My shop is in north Las Vegas, just east of the north Las Vegas airport.

Yeah man! That’s awesome. That’s how it should be. The ladder truss that was up there was perfectly fine it was just the way it was hung was horrible. And you can only hang so much weight off of ladder truss. As you know Box truss is soooo much stronger. Vegas does a lot of “rock and roll” type rigging. Concerts, events, shows, etc. I’m Local 80. I work in the studios on TV and Feature films. So it’s a little different but basically the same.

Cool man. Little far away from here haha but I’ll keep an eye out if I think of anybody I know from Vegas who is capable of that stuff you need

My current project just came into the shop last night. Apparently a lady in a brand new Mercedes crossed over two lanes of oncoming traffic and wiped out the landing gear on this trailer.

I hope that trailer is empty !!

Or already towed into the shop and supported by cribbing or something like the Custom stands I built in another life.

From the pictures looks like a pretty simple fix unless there is damage the pictures don`t show.

I love this thread! It’s my new fav on TW.

I finished welding the inside of the smoker, and got 1/2 the chimney burned together yesterday.

My welds are coming along (pics to come later) and I’m excited to build some bumpers next.

Been working on a mobile bench / toolbox for the racetrack. Nearing completion now. All aluminum with a steel roller cabinet side box as a permanent install. I had never done any aluminum before last summer. Getting better everyday. Really wish my mig could easily be upgraded to a spool gun. It can’t so that means a new mig plus the spool and accessories or keep doing everything tig.

Wish I had access to an inexpensive cad setup. It would make it a heck of a lot easier than thinking and adjusting on the fly.

No the trailer wasn't empty it was about half full. Street sweepers dump their waste in the trailer so it gets pretty nasty in there and it's a live bottom trailer which has a conveyor that runs on the bottom you can see it hanging underneath. I'll tell ya that thing stinks really bad. Other than the nastiness it's a fairly easy fix just have to fab up a new landing gear mount and fender.

Google Sketchup is a decent program. Takes a bit to learn but works well for planning things out.

Finished a bunch of welding on the smoker. Still some more details to work on, but should be done soon.

Here is a pic of the welds I was getting on the smoke stack.

The coal basket is just mocked up, ran out of time to finish today.

Can’t wait to clean it up, paint it, and give it a test run!

I need some advice from fellow fabricators plz. I'm going to box my rear end of the frame. I'm gonna cut my own piecesonce I make templates. Do u make them so the pieces fit into the c channel? Then weld the edges? Or do I make them fit flush against the c channel and weld the top and bottom ?
Picture should help what I mean I hope
