Display switching day/night once or twice per minute. Normal?

Picked up a new TRD OR this week with tech package (non JBL). I've noticed that around 3pm or so when the sky is getting darker, the display will constantly shift between day and night settings. It's as though it doesn't know which to do, and will switch day/night like once or twice a minute. I put a video of it up on youtube (link below).

Note that while this happens, the headlights are on in auto mode. Sensitivity is set around the middle for what it's worth, BUT display vs headlight sensitivity seem to be independent of one another.

If I cover the light sensor on the dash, the display will switch to night mode, as would be expected, and stay in it.

Anyone else experience this issue? Suggestions?

I have my sensitivity for the display set to max. Never had it switch when not appropriate lighting conditions.

 

The sensor for the lights is a small bubble on the passenger side of the dash. Dealers tend to put the registration sticker here and the light changed mess with it. Move or remove the sticker that covers the bubble

 

Maybe this is it. I'm in MA and the inspection sticker is right above the sensor, though the sticker is transluscent so wouldn't expect it to mess with it this much. InsuredToyota - does CA also put inspection sticker there?

 

Yes that’s where it is at in ca. When I took mine off it solved the problem

 

The troopers here are strict about inspections. Did you move it up or toward driver's side? Or just keep it in your glove compartment in case you're pulled over, and say that you just got your windshield replaced?

 

No inspection in CA. My registration from the dealer is still there though, also not sure what my sensitivity setting is set at.

Mine has no stickers but it does switch back and forth when the sun goes down, its no big deal to me.

 

Seems like the photoresistor is way too sensitive to small lighting changes. I might just put some 35% tint on mine and see what that does.

And you don't have the screen flicker issue?

 

I have this problem occasionally. Doesn't bother me, but I think it could be a function of the sun angle, visor position etc. One time it did flash on and off annoyingly; turned out to be a parking pass sliding on and off the sensor in the turns.

 

Mine did this for the first time last week. Cloud cover approaching dusk with spotty rain. Under the circumstances it was doing exactly what it should. If the conditions are right the display will change. IF the circumstances stay at the exact light levels for the change it may switch back and forth.

Either change the sensitivity or learn to live with it until the conditions change.
