Thinking about a remote start in my 2017 Tacoma. Should I have one installed by the dealer or an aftermarket garage ?

If you want something with any sort of range, go with a proper remote start system. If you want to start the truck in your driveway from your bed, the KBVoodoo system is pretty good.

I have the latter option and it's decent, the price is right... but the range is limited by your key fob because it piggybacks this system.

All the “kbvoodoo” remote start is a Directed Dball2 module. It’s a $35 dollar module for a remote start that you can use as a stand alone remote start for push button Tacoma’s. It’s not his product by any means. He slaps a sticker on it, throws it in a white box with a basic installation sheet and a few zipties, ground ring and a self tapping screw.

Be careful who you have do it, it can mess up a lot of stuff up.

My wifes car has a kit, all the scotch locks give me a fit under the dash. I would just as soon have nothing than that kind of a mess.

FWIW she has the Drone one you are supposed to be able to use your cell phone with... supposed to is the key phrase because that doesn't work anymore.

Drone just plugs into a data port in the remote starter usually (unless hardwired into a non compatible unit) the older drones ran off of ATT 2g network. They switched over to Verizon so the old drones would not work on Verizon. They sent out emails for a free drone upgrade campaign. That’s long over now. If you had the older drone and it’s not working, that’s more than likely the reason why

Changed the module, still no workie.

Car didn't have remote start from the factory.

Her brother put it in, he does it professionally but for some reason or another won't get around to seeing what the problem is... so I get to hear about it. I pulled the dash apart and checked the connections and physically saw no problem with it... its above my pay grade to go much farther.

All the ones I've seen say the car shuts off if any doors are opened, how do you get in after starting remotely? Or is that only if another door besides the drivers is opened?

Mine doesn't as I press the door unlock button as I approach it.

My service advisor told me Toyota is offing a OEM remote start as a factory add-on to the 2018 Tacoma's. He said it should not be to long before I can order one through the parts department. This is what I'm going to do instead of other options.

Has to do with the PTS, all Toyotas with PTS will disable the remote start aka kill the engine when the doors are opened. you have to get in and restart the motor as normal.

Does anyone know if the takeover procedure works with the 3rd gens with PTS? I don't have remote start, but would like to install one if the takeover procedure works.

So then for PTS it's pretty much useless?

Has anyone tried the takeover procedure below? I have read it works on some of the Toyota/ Lexus.

A standard sequence to initiate the take over procedure is as follows:
    • Remote start the vehicle.
    • Unlock/disarm the vehicle with remote.
    • Enter the vehicle and press the foot brake. (Following the disarm you have (45) forty five seconds to do this)
NOTE: If the foot brake is not pressed within 45 seconds the procedure will be cancelled and the vehicle will shut off once the door is opened.

Other procedures may exist depending upon the vehicle and intallation. If you would like confirmation of this process for your vehicle it is recommended to contact the installer.

This procedure is not available on all PTS vehicles. Some vehicles may require extra installation by the dealer in order for this process to exist. Many Toyota PTS vehicles do not allows this procedure to work.
