So I finally found the perfect phone mount (for my Taco anyways)! Requirements included something that would work for many differently sized phones with the case on, but it shouldn't be too ungainly when not being used. The hardest part, it had to be reversible once we eventually sell the truck in a 100 years. Easy, right? :p

First, I tried to do the RAM mount on the vent, but it did not allow for the vent to completely close and it was rather bulky (equated to a definite no-go for the wife). Also, I was disappointed to find that it required 2 hands to secure the phone inside the x-grip.

After looking at fabricating my own franken-creation, I came across this simple magnetic mount, the Mob Armor MobNetic Elite:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0725Q9YP5/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It has 2 magnets...both the bottom and the top are magnetic. You mount a metal plate on the dash with the 3M backing and then add another metal plate to the back of your phone. I mounted the first plate just to the left of the button for the hazard lights. I found that it could easily mount to the top of the dash trim as well.

It I then routed the USB cable from the cig lighter, up under the radio trim, and then out at where the plate was attached (did require a little bit of trimming the bottom of the trim so the cable to fit).

Then add the other metal plate to your phone(s) and then angle as required (up to 90 degrees with the Elite that I am using).

As I mentioned, this could have also fit perfectly on the top of the trim, either just to the right or to the left of the instrument cluster & steering wheel. I didn't do that because we don't like to have it that high, but I know some of you would prefer it here since it puts the phone in your in a better line-of-sight.

Hope this helps open up another option for others who are looking for a phone mount!

Thanks...but now my wife is too happy with herself because her "nagging" (about the RAM mount) paid off. lol

    My wife bought this one:

    https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Universal-Magnetic-Mount-Ultra-Compact/dp/B073PRPRNN

Works super well, although she attached it a tad too far back from the edge. It comes with multiple sticky pieces so I'm going to pull it off and mount it about 2mm closer to the edge, which will let the phone sit a bit more vertical. We run the cord across the top of the steering column. I use &roid and she uses iOS so we can't share cords anyway.

She's left handed so this works super well for her; just great for me.

Do you have a picture of where you routed the cable(s)? I'm sure others might like to see it. :)

I just thought of something with the Mob Armor mount I have...I could stick another metal plate up in the same spot you have yours (or maybe to the right of steering wheel). That way, I can move the mount to the high or low location whenever I want! Oh the possibilities! I saw one jeep guy mount his up by the rear view mirror even.

Just wanted to post a quick update on the magnetic phone mount. I regularly use the Samsung Pay feature on my Galaxy S7e and I was afraid it wouldn't work with the metal inside the case (which you can see in the pics below, I placed it between the hard outer shell and the inner rubber shell). Thankfully, it all works fine!

The Samsung Pay antenna is towards the top 1/3rd of the phone, so if you put the washer (metal plate) toward the bottom 1/3rd, then it will all work without issue (to include the wireless charging and NFC).

How does the mount hold up on off road situations. Does it move around or fall off the mount at all??

The magnets are nice and strong and it has not even slightly wobbled or moved while hitting the potholes and speedbumps that are all over the place here...but no off-roading for me (yet). Before I bought it, I did read read plenty of reviews saying it has held up for others who have gone off-roading such as Jeep owners.

Keep in mind, this won't work well if you were using a big device (phablet or a tablet) or if your case was really thick and you didn't want to stick the metal plate on the outside of that thick case.

I wish I bought the mobnetic version sometimes, but was skeptical since I broke 2 previous mounts and had my phone fall off my previous magnetic mount. But mob armor definitely makes a quality product, very stout and it didn't move one bit on the last trail run I did.

Just a quick update. There is a super thin piece of rubber between that covers the magnet (so that it doesn't scratch your phone/case). I did notice that my phone will move ever-so-slightly when I have it in landscape mode. This is because I do not have the metal plate in the exact center of my phone. To fix this, I just put a dab of glue under the rubber piece and now my phone never moves at all!

Another fun note, I love tossing my phone onto this mount! As I get into the truck, I just toss it a couple inches and the magnet catches it with a solid thud! lol

I had this on for ~3 months.... then it fell off.

    I was thrilled.

the weight of your phone + gravity will eventually win over the 3M tape.

Agreed. Thank you for sharing. I’ve been looking for something exactly like this for awhile. I like hondo’s but I didn’t like that it covered the a/c vent.

There goes more money from the wallet. It did seem heavy anyhow.

Mine is still holding up perfectly! This might be because the top of the metal plate is slightly wedged under the radio trim.

I have since moved up to a bigger phone and no issues with the whole setup still.

Of course, this setup also works well because my wife has a different phone. No matter who has the truck, the mount easily works with any phone we have a metal washer on the back.
