Whenever I visit Hawaii, I rent a car. What I would do is that check all major rental car companies and book the cheapest one in advance. No payment required. By doing this, at least I do know I have transportation in HI. Then I will keep checking the rental car prices until I fly out. If I can find a better deal, I cancel the existing one and get the better deal.

I used to do typical touristy things in HI but now I enjoy more not-so-fancy things in HI. I highly recommend hiking in HI. You can check internet and plan by yourself. No need to hire a guide or join a tour. I also like to eat in ordinary local restaurants. Not fancy at all, but you can have something different there and you can save $ too!

Yeah the hotel is more fancy than where I wanted to lay (Waldorf Astoria)

We usually prefer to do our own thing
    With no guides

I like to take in the local culture and local restaurants :)

Have family on Maui, and have been there 5x in last 4 years.

    Rent a car.

I stayed at Grand, with the wife, and had to pay the stupid fee, but the resort is killer with all the amenities and stunning beach.

I'd drive the Road to Hana. Be careful, locals aren't courteous. And give them the right away on the road, since they travel it everyday.

I have a lot of killer spots for you. PM me if you need more info

unless he goes around the long way... lol
if not already, book your ride now... it's a peak season through the holidays and hard to get a deal if you wait too long.
honestly, dont stress about getting lost... you will be in paradise (and it's a small island).

    thing to do...
there are tons of tourist info all over the island and the internet...

    far as food...
    star noodle
    da kitchen
    mamas
    miso fat
    sensi
there's plenty to choose from... but some are very pricey (if you are on a budget, you should look up the prices on yelp)

i hope you spend sometime chilling at the amazing beaches checking out the sunrises and sunsets and not get too caught up on everything maui has to offer (reason to return to maui)...

btw, look out into/over the water for whales!

    One more thing.

If you want to drink coconut juice, be sure to tell the vender " I would like to eat the meat later, so give me the young coconut" After drinking the juice, the vender will cut the coconut into half w/o extra charge and you can eat the meat by scraping w/ spoon.

I do not know how to tell which one is young or old, but somehow the venders seem to know. The meat of old coconut is too thick and too hard, while young coconut has thinner and softer meat.

Resist the temptation to rent a Jeep. Unless you want the entire island to know you’re a stupid tourist that drives too slow and doesn’t know where you’re going.

    Ask me how I know....

Yeah that’s true. The Jeep is a dead giveaway though.

My favorite part of Maui was every other car on the road seemed to be a badass Tacoma or 4Runner. Super cool to see.
