How to bypass annoying locking feature?

I just bought a 2003 Tacoma that came keyless entry. It's a nice feature, but it won't lock my doors with the key in the ignition. Is there any way to bypass that feature so that I can leave a key in the ignition and still be able to lock the doors via keyless entry.

Was that an aftermarket alarm?

 

I can't say for sure, but I don't think so because the remote has the Toyota emblem on it.

s a design feature of the key less entry that wont let you lock your keys inside of the truck while running. the door will lock if it's closed, but wont lock if the door is open.
with the key in the ignition, the key fob is useless, and will not lock or unlock the doors while running. Best bet is a spare key.

 

on my 08 I have to use a key too lock the doors from the outside if the engine is running, not really a problem since I always carry a spare on my house key ring.

 

Wait a second, I'm confused. Can't you just push the lock/unlock button on the door armrest controls?

Personally, I wish the doors would automatically lock when you put the vehicle in drive. My Honda was nice because I could program all of that stuff.

 

According to this site you can set the car to lock when the ignition is turned on, and unlock when the ignition is turned off. Seems like that would be about the same as putting it in drive.

 

All I want to do is leave the key in the ignition permenantly, and use my remote to lock and unlock the door. But, the keyless entry won't lock the door if the key is still in the ignition. I still haven't found a way to bypass this.

 

....just put the keys in the cupholder....

 

For some reason I think this only works for 1st gens.

Also, when the doors lock due to the car being put into Drive there is less likely of a chance that the keys would get locked in the truck with it running.

 

doesnt seem like a very good idea to be leaving your keys in the truck, more incentive for someone to want to break in regardless of what security system you have
