I think there is something to be said about using heavier weight oil for peace of mind. Nowadays everything is so tight in engines flow rate of viscosity has to be correct. Toyota is so obssed with " economy" I think they're missing the point. Those thinner lubicrants seem just adequate, not exceptional. But adequate for cooling and lubicration.

The application of the 2GRE is in a truck, that has the ability on paper to tow 6,000 lbs. Not sure if a 0W20 would enjoy withstanding that additional strain on the drivetrain vs heavier weight.

When I got Mobil 1, OW20 it says " formulated for Honda's, Toyota" basically commuter cars. Very counter intuitive when you're putting it into a truck ha.

Basically all applications with Economy in mind. But that's what the 2GRE FKS is.. It's a car engine in a truck.

Ehh.. I think it's good. But when you go on Bobisoilguy you read reports especially opposed 4s, boxer designs that piston slap occurs with Mobil 1.( Subarus) Some say it's suffers from shearability issues ( thinning or break down). I think I'll give Castrol Edge ( German or Belgian) a try next time just for shits and gigs..

Meh, I think Mobil1 in general is excellent oil. In fact all modern oils are pretty darn good. I think BITOG forums suffer the same as here or anywhere, a bunch of really dedicated enthusiasts arguing over tiny marginal differences and esoteric minutia. Present company excluded, of course.

True. They tend to become very snobbish. For instance "Amsoil is better than Mobil 1 because it's fully synthetic vs Mobil 1 with a type III basestock." That's usually a popular argument over there.

To me I couldn't afford Amsoil signature at around almost 10.00 a quart. Supposedly the savings are you " change it less" thus less $$$

The funny thing about the oil argument to me is that most people are going to trade the vehicle in in 4-5 years. I have never once been asked what kind of oil I ran when I traded one in.

I wonder if Toyota could tell you if the free oil changes were performed on your truck if you gave them your VIN number?

Did you do your first oil change yourself? If so, at how many miles? My dealer wants me to take my 2017 in for a oil change at 10k miles which seems a little too high for me. I used to do my oil changes at about every 3k.

Yes, did my own at 5K. 3K miles is quite outdated. Somewhere between 5-10K is the current norm. If you have many short trips or tow regularly, closer to 5K. If you put a ton of highway miles on 10K. Oil and engine materials (bearings, tribological coatings, surface finish, etc) are much better than they use to be.

What does the owner's manual say? While engines these days don't need you to follow an elaborate break-in procedure the factory engine oil fill may not be the same type or weight oil Toyota recommends you use normally. So it's not unusual that they tell you to leave it in for a minimum number of miles to guarantee you fully seat the rings and the like. But to me 10,000 miles sounds very excessive, a long time to wait for the first engine oil change.

Correct. Synthetic oil can go 5k-10k. Created from the military for arctic conditions. This stuff isn't your dads dino oil anymore.

The owners manual says 10k unless you drive hard then 5k changes.

I meant for the first change. I guess it doesn't say anything about initial maintenance, then.

No they don't get into any details like that, I ended up doing my first change around 1500 miles.

Gotcha. The only brand new vehicle reference I have is our 2017 Forester and Subaru was specific that the first oil change be at 4,000 miles even though the normal interval is 6,000 miles or 6 months. The general thought is they use either an additive or break-in oil at the factory.

1,500 sounds ideal for the first oil change. Can’t let those shaving stay in there too long

Basic US thrash. THRASH. Exodus and DRI... pretty basic. I wasn’t talking about mathematical geek metal. US metal is the best metal.

You know like the locust and unbroken, great San Diego metal.
