Make it fit inside (or pretty close to inside) and weld the edges.

a friend of mine just said the same thing. Makes sense using the steel for strength vs my welds... is 3/16" too heavy for this application? Maybe 1/8?

Inside. Could probably even get away with stitching your piece 4" on 12" to get good surface area without having to kill it with weld.

Frame is 1/8"....least where i checked by the rear leaf spring hanger. Id use either 1/8" or 10gauge (id lean more towards 10gauge)

I tried to do mine so they fit along the edge and left room to lap the weld to both pieces and make a nice rounded corner.

    Just curious Why ??

Maybe I can learn something new .

If I was going to strengthen the rear part of the frame the last thing in this part of the USA I would want is to close more of it in.

In fact I am adding more open space to the section already closed

I just want a mist set up from the produce section at the grocery that'll lightly fog out the frame with oil automatically every 1500 miles or so.

So I am basically buttoned up w the smoker and am moving into cleaning and paint prep.

Any suggestions on how to prep? I wiped it w acetone and then wire wheeled it. I think I need to give it another wipe down. Should I be flap discing or using a grinding wheel instead? It looks more polished, but no super clean.

Depends on what you're painting with and what parts you're painting. The high temp paint I used on the outside of mine wasn't picky. I brought mine up to 500* and then hit it with soap and water. After it dried I gave one last wipen down with acetone.

The inside of mine is bare. A couple of pork shoulders and there was enough fat in there to protect it.

You washed it w soap and water after it had cooled from 500*, then an acetone wipe, then paint?

    Did I follow?

I’ll prob just end up w some high heat spray paint from lowes or HD

I haven’t been able to dig up a super clear, agreed upon method for painting smokers.

Seems like some people even leave the exterior of the firebox un-painted and instead season it w fat like they do the interior.

I boxed my frame. Dumped a can of Eastwood internal frame coating in and called it good, but my '01 has zero rust.

If you're not in the rust zone, I wouldn't worry about it in the slightest. I'm sure @lotsoftoys will be fine.

You have them for 1st gens?

I understand inside... but I feel welding will be more difficult. Thinking what @Whitecloud said down here makes most sensevvvvvvvv

No way... it's gotta be 1/8. Flimsy and weak

I'm gonna feel it out when I see the material at the steel place.
    Bloc
    And how'd that go?

You bevel the 4" stitch sections before you flush mount it. Then fill the stitch sections tying into the C channel.

Yes. While it was still warm to the touch. The metal grain will still be a bit open and the soap water will help degrease the oil that's in the metal that'll try to seep out as you cook at a later date. Then I hit it with alcohol to prep it.

I used high temp paint. You need to burn it up again, and it's applied when hot. Mines been outdoors for 3 years, still looks great.

If it was me boxing in that frame, I would make the plate just a touch bigger than the frame.

The bottom I would place the plate inside the frame with enough of the bottom frame piece sticking past the new plate to run a bead. This gives you an inside angle weld.

The top I want the plate to run past the top of the frame so I have another inside angle weld.

So what if the inside plate is not quite vertacle.

I'm lazy and will do anything to keep from welding upside down.

    Once

Worked for me. Haven't had any issues. Check my build thread and pics. Have lots of them up there. Rebuild the cross members also, including the rear gas tank mount.

    So
Forgot to ask. Are you doing this for strength or to seal it up? If you're just sealing it, go as light as possible. If for strength, you deff don't need to box the entire thing the whole way.
