Wheel weights question

So I just had a set of new tires installed this morning. I noticed the wheel weights are all on the outside where they're visible. Am I correct in thinking that a wheel can be balanced with the weights on the inside so I don't see them? They're alloys if that matters.

I have to go back tomorrow because they forgot to mount the spare. I'll ask them to redo all 4 wheels if I can make a case for this, but I don't want to be a dick for no reason.

 

I've only seen two kinds of wheel weights. The clip-ons which can either go on the outside (face) or behind the wheel. The stick-ons are the ones that uses double sided tape and are usually used for alloy wheels as they go inside the back of the wheels.

 

These are the clip-ons. One wheel has them on both sides, the other 3 are only outside.

 

I've always had mine balanced using the adhesive weights on the inside of the wheel. Never had an issue with one falling off.

 

I've only seen clip-ons on steel wheels. Some alloys don't even allow for clip-ons. Have them re-balance with stick-ons.

 

who did the work? just asking so I don't use them. Agree with you on visibility - outside balance weights placed on inside of exposed rim face using sticky tab weights (like oem).

 

Yes they could have used sticky weights on the inside the rim so you don’t see them BUT my experience is sometimes they can rub calipers and knock right off. So depends how much clearance you have first off and also how much weight it needed to be balanced out.

 

A place called Gerald's Tires. They are very highly regarded, and I've used them before with good results.

Today was just a debacle. I removed the spare and put it in the bed (to make things easier for them), along with the 4 new tires. The spare was an original tire from 2007, so I wanted to replace it with one of the removed Michelin LTX from 2011. They literally had to move it out of the way to get to the new tires. At least they saved one of the old tires and put it in the bed next to the spare.

I also got an alignment. When I asked for a print out, they said their printer wasn't working and there was no record saved in the computer. I spoke to the guy who did the alignment and he said everything was adjusted to within specs. Driving home, the truck was pulling noticeably to the right. It hadn't pulled at all before I went in today. I only wanted the alignment because the front shocks were replaced recently. So tomorrow he's gonna recheck it and provide a print out.

 

They will have to use low profile stick on weights or they will hit the calipers.

In our previously owned Jeep (35’s) - a guy at the shop literally stacked the stick-on weights 3 high!!!
They didn’t hit the calipers - but I ended up taking the wheel back and saying WTF?? LOL

 

Stacking weights it’s acrually better (to a point) helps them balance a lot easier and so you don’t have the weight spread as much. I dunno about stacking more then two high and seems like a lot of weight if they need to go that high... probably should of flipped the tire on the rim and re balanced

 

They were 35x12.50 Mud Terrains and we had issues with balancing them. Nobody could get it right. We ended up getting ‘EQUAL’ tire balancing compound instead.
