Billstiens 5100 @1.75, 5125, 1.5 AAL,Leaf Spring TSB,TRD Intake, Roof Rack, Satoshi Grill, BHLM,T-Rex Eyelids, Undercover Cover, Powdercoated Sport Rims, KC Slimline 8" Lights, MTX ReQ5 w/ipod imput, 12" Shallow Pioneer Sub, RF 800.4 amp, JBL Comp, Bed Ext, USB Port, Shorty Antena, Spider Trax Spacers,TRD Skid Plate, Napier Sportz Tent II, Scangauge II, AirBedz
So, I picked up a Pioneer TS SW1241D , 12" shallow sub a few weeks back. I had some equipment in the garage and figured I had some spare time and would toss a simple system in my d/c Tacoma still retaining the factory deck.
I bought a MTX REQ5 from a fellow member, found some component's, dug out the Rockford Fosgate Punch 800.4 amp. Kinda dated but it's been a solid work horse. Now it was just down to making a sub box
This sub is rated to have a box with a cubic foot rating between 0.5 - 1.0. So I made a sealed box at 0.8cuft. I bridged two channels and wired in the sub. The sub was not sounding very good for a 12". My little 10" kenwood I had pounded twice as much. When you turned up the gain the sub would travel and knock the bump plate which wasn't good. So the guy at the Car Audio store said to port the box 3"x 8" in the corner.
I ported the box and there was an instant improvement. Sounded better but when you try and get the sub in the "sweet spot" it would start making a machanical knock. Sometimes not even up that high. The gain was less than half at that point.
After having the guy at the store "tune" the system it was so dialed down to control the sub travel you could barly hear or feel the sub. He said I needed to build a larger box...
Reluctantly I did and did everything possible to make it 100% including dyno matting the interior back and side walls of the box. The box is now 1.0 cuft after the sub has been factored in.
Deeper base yes, same problems... Yes. My amp seems to be getting hot also even dial down..
I have never used a shallow sub before and as of right now I'm regreting ever buying this sub..

Ok, this thing pounds... My bad. I ended up cutting off the extra power supply cable, shortend the ground and reground the contact point to the chassis. The amp was heating up and would send a distorded single which let to my issues. I've put a few hours on this sub today and performed great!

    Glad to hear it man.

Let this be an example to the rest of you (good example not bad). When you install equipment in the proper way you get significantly better results. DO NOT skimp on install. It is the single most important part of the system.

Ive got I believe the same pioneer shallow mount (a single) and love it. Articulate and just enough thump for my musical tastes.

The reason the port improved the sound is because the air pressure created BEHIND the sub needs somewhere to go.

Foresure, I did buy a great amp wire kit and thought I could keep the extra 6' of power wire tucked under the seat and the extra 1.5' of ground wire. Didn't want to cut them thinking I might need it later and you see how it went. I thought I had my base's covered but it's the simple things that are often over looked.

Love it now and the MTX req5 is such a great unit.

Makes sence. I think the amp works less as there is less resistance and the sub travels less for a the same hit.

I can take pictures if someone will post them for me? (iPhone).. Can't upload to site.

I have an account with photobucket but it seems that you can't upload photos from an iPhone. I would use my pc but it has some issues and can't use it. I tried using an upload account to Photoshop also but after uploading I can't link it?
