Despite the poll, I bet the vast majority of people finance today.

Yup, as long as you can actually make good on a return that's reasonably liquid.
Too often I see people take this advice to heart and then they misguidedly "invest" in some random asset that might appreciate in value but is nearly impossible to liquidate.
Sure, the value of those gold coins, AR15 lower receivers, a 72 El Camino, and some Mongolian basket weavings might be more than you paid, but try turning it into cold hard cash short term.

Anyways, I ended up buying my Taco cash outright because the trade differential was only about $2,000 - you can't finance such a small amount through most lenders.

I had my 2nd. gen. Tacoma paid off and I got the check for it from insurance (about $26k) and some cash in savings. I'm waiting for my bank to compile the actual cash for me to pick up to go to the Toyota dealer to get a new Taco. I've dreamt of the day I could just whip out the cash and drop it on the desk in front of the sales person, and the manager if I'm lucky. Then again, I can't finance anything in the US, but I still love the feeling.

Ya I agree. Investments are a risk regardless of how good you are. It's also all well and good while you have a full-time job. I overheard a conversation at a bar not long ago and a guy was talking about a $900 truck payment for his F-250.. I hope he doesn't get laid off because that's a lot of cash to owe on a vehicle with no income.

Yeah, 2K isn't enough to sweat. I financed around 27K.

I voted through a different financer, but initially I used Toyota, then immediately refi'd through my CU.

tying up 33k in a depreciating asset is stupid unless you're a multi-millionaire.

Well that makes more sense! Congratulations to you and your family, sounds like things are great!

I'm 28 (29 next month) and have worked since I was 14. Given my generation and current times, I'll have to work until I'm dead.
