I have searched and searched here and ttora and google but still have a few questions.
    I have a 4cyl AT with 4.56 gears (B04A code)
I found two complete axles with TRD lockers at a local scrap yard one is 4.10 and the other is 4.30.
    Now to the questions:

    1. Can I regear either of them to 4.56 to match the front of my truck or would I have to match the front to either the 4.10 or 4.30?

    2. Which would be a good choice for a 4cyl auto on 33" tires: 4.10, 4.30 or my 4.56?

    3. They are also listed as 4cyl/6cyl, AT/MT, 4x2/4x4, db/xtra/reg cab, etc, etc does any of that matter?

    4. Would anything else be required to do this swap besides the axle, control box and switch?

    Thanks

Why not just put an ARB in? The 8.4" axle (that you have right now) is stronger than the TRD 8"

ARB would end up running me $1500+ depending on what else I need, the axle swap would be closer to $700-900

Alright, that isnt really helpful. I looked into ARB and it it way too expensive, ARB is stuff is almost double the cost in Canada compared to the States or shipping is deadly, if it can be acquired at all. If I have issues with an ARB install there are no shops around that install them so knowledge is nonexistant.

So to sum up, I dont want an ARB locker.

Regear the rear to 4.56, it'll be easier then having to tear out the front. Your 4cyl will handle 33s much better at that ratio then at the lower ones. In fact if you can, it wouldn't be bad to go up to 4.88s but that would require two new sets of gears so 4.56s will be fine.

Make sure the locker motor is in good condition. and as for the names, i think they should all be the same if they are lockers and off a tacoma.

They don't come from the factory with 4.56, but yes you can regear them to 4.56 with aftermarket parts.
I have a TRD and regeared mine to 4.56.

    Thread hijack.

    Same question, but '96 2WD 5Lug.

It's been almost impossible to find an an axle locally, but WHICH axle would I be looking for? The 2nd gen trd is wider. The locking 1st gen axle has different mounts for the ubolts (overaxle vs underaxle). And I have heard mixed reviews about swapping the rear axle from a 4runner. and I dont know what the swappability is between the model years and how hard it would be wiring, obviously. but as far as the actual bolting patterns and mounting. Please help. I've posted this question in quite a few threads with no good response. I know you crazy yota gurus are out there......

Nope. Too much work and expense. Went with a truetrac. Way way cheaper, fairly easy to install and *nearly* as good as the elocker.

    4.56 at a minimum, in fact with a 4cyl I'd run 4.88's no question.

How much did you pay for the TrueTrac setup?

I've had two elockers fail on me. I'd say mechanical is an advantage.

I cant speak on oem elocker quality because I never had one but the TrueTrac is solid, and silent. Only disadvantage is that it isnt completely selectable.
