Half way through some raw fish. Who’s got the best sushi coast to coast? Any specialty rolls or fish you guys get that you think is rare?

When I visited NY I went to the seafood place at the Chelsea market and had a round of Omakase at the sushi bar there. One of the items I was served was sea urchin sushi. Honestly one of the most complex and strange flavors ive ever had in my life. Was a strange mix of Smokey, Salty, Sweet and Tangy. I havent seen that anywhere in Ontario since I had it

On that note.. there arent too many crazy options here in Toronto as far as I know. I know a 'sushi burrito' place just opened up downtown here last year. Interesting concept, still havent been though :p

I’m starting to get back into eating sushi again. Took a bit of a hiatus.. uni is good af that was in the plate pictured earlier with a quail egg on top

Here’s some stuff I thought was fairly rare to find:

Raw Octupus Sushi (hands down amazing stuff, have yet to find another sushi bar that serves raw oct it’s always cooked), and Needle Fish Sushi (not even sure but taste like it’s fresh water)

The place is called Shimizu on 51st and 8th in Manhattan I stumbled across that has it. Not one American in the place and not a lick of English spoken.

best sushi i had was outside that bigass fish market in Tokyo. language barrier was unsurmountable, so we spoke "fish".

we pointed and laughed alot. that sushi guy drank alot for the it being so early in the morning. oh, there were no rolls.

    northbay guys.

HANA sushi in cotati..maybe rohnert park. wife and i went in and the guy was from japan. i did the omakase thing where it's his choice. i knew i was effed when he gave us two types of UNI..he told us in very broken english that the red one was from the waters off of his home village in Japan, and the other was from mendocino. both were good, very different.

my wife asked, "shit..how much do you think this is going to cost if we just ate UNI from japan?"

other highlights. Abalone liver, monk fish liver..etc.

it was so expensive!! haha. we left shell-shocked..but happy.

We have several absolutely fantastic sushi restaurants here. Nothing especially rare, but our salmon is what the fuck is up

I'm so lucky, small town of 7,000 and we have a great Japanese food place. Past events, not getting political, lead to a movement of Japanese into rural Alberta so there are some great sushi places here.

I feel a bit embarassed though. The local place started making their Americanized Crispy Crispy rolls a bit differently and went to using a tempura battered shrimp in the middle and then deep frying the entire inside out roll again. It's obviously not raw but it's so fricken good especially paired with a good amount of Sashimi.

Also, just for the thread, IIRC Sushi is any time vinegared rice is in direct contact with something else (raw fish, cooked fish, whatever). Sashimi is when the dish is just raw fish without the rice on it.

    Great sushi there!

Have you ever had puffer fish? That stuff's great too.

Best sushi / sashimi I've ever had although it's from Japan so I'm cheating here...Fatty Tuna (Otoro) and Squid were my favorites.

I had a chance to go to the top rated Sushi place in Seattle twice on a work trip. Just awesome when you find a place that serves true belly tuna as their standard fair!
