Well, that was a nerve-racking experience. I finally received a few different tuning files to install from Orange Virus -- marked A, B, and C. There was no description of the difference between the three, so I searched this thread for description, which I found here. 'A' seemed the best bet to start with. I went and filled up the truck with 92 octane, and then pulled to the far side of the parking lot to do the write (turning the engine off, and then accessory on). I began writing the ECU file to the truck, and then realized PCM Flash was set to 'GearBox'! I quickly cancelled the write, and without turning the truck off, selected the gearbox file I had read from the truck a couple days ago. I wrote that file to the 'GearBox', and turned the truck off, and tried to start it. The truck just cranked and cranked without firing up. Clearly I had messed something up, and had visions of buying a new ECU module at the dealer.

But then I thought, maybe I should write the stock ECU file to the ECU (even though it was only 'GearBox' that had been written to earlier). So I chose the stock ECU file I'd read from the truck a couple days ago, and wrote that to 'P5-CAN-bus' in PCM Flash. Turned the truck off again, and tried to start it. It fired right up.

I then finally wrote 102C-A to the truck. I've put about 20 miles on it around town, and as expected I have not noticed a tremendous difference between it and the 04B03 update from the dealer a few days ago, even on 92 octane. The jury's still out. I'll give another update to this thread in a few days. Nevertheless, I am still very thrilled to have the drivability improvement over what I had a few days ago, if only by being alerted to the existence of the TSB firmware update from the dealer.

I think I remember reading earlier in this thread that the truck will still do adapting, even with this tune? Or am I mistaken?

Sorry you had this experience flashing, our emails do say do not write to gearbox can.

I will update the info so that there is explanations for each file.

Yes, they certainly do, it was my mistake not to double-check that setting before writing. But I am very glad that with this kit you provide the better quality hardware so that the ECU doesn't get bricked :)

I'd give it some time - I know for me even the "03" Toyota calibration update that felt nice soon after flash was a faaaar cry from the power on any of OV's tunes. You should at least notice it holding gears longer and revving a bit higher in the power band vs. the Toyota calibration. And, if you ever find 1st to be a bit too aggressive (doesn't sound like it now) the C shifting version of the tune softens out 1st while maintaining the other more refined and aggressive shift points for the 2-5 gears. Happy tuning! <you might have needed to drive on "03" for awhile but hopefully w/ the tune you'll never experience the sore degradation the rest of us have after getting that Toyota calibration>. It was crazy-making to leave the dealer happy with the software update thinking they SOLVED it only to have it run like shit again after a week or so. Your truck will never run like crap on the tune, but there will still be development on the shifting behavior as it does still do some level of learning that seems to undo some of the shift stuff over time although it never reaches the same idiotic level of Toyota's stock calibration (and power and throttle are always much much improved vs. stock no matter what the transmission learns...) ;)

Yes, I definitely need more time with the new tune. I've only done stop-and-go driving around town today. If the 'learning' process causes driveability to worsen over time, would writing the file back to the truck reset that? I'm fine doing that periodically, now that I have the hardware to do so from Orange Virus.

Are you sure you loaded the file? You should easily be able to tell the difference between this and stock tune. Have you done a WOT acceleration? When I had the update done by the dealer there was some improvement most of it temporary but none in the power department and most of the shifting improvements where gone in 100-200 miles.

I think part of it is that this person went from 04B01 (junk tune from toyota) to 04B03 (huge difference over 04B01) and then very shortly after to our map, so it's such a wild difference between 04B01 to 04B03 that it's hard to see the difference from 04B03 to our tune

Are these sold out? It says sold out on 2016 automatic, but I can add to cart for 2016 manual. I thought the kit was the same, different file? I need this. @OVTune , I have an auto, can I still buy any of the ones in stock even though 2016 auto says out of stock?

Just curious how many units sold in the last 48 hours. That allocation went quick.

I ordered I think 15-20 min after the deal was announced and am order #2133.. I think the post right before they announced sold out was 2169? So at least 36! (unless the order #s aren’t strictly from Tacoma tune purchases)

I'm curious too, as the ones who selected Manual Transmission are gonna add to the stack of chord wood waiting for 1.03 :goingcrazy::goingcrazy::goingcrazy:
