Mileage is persistent. At least as long as ECU is in the vehicle.

if they switched the ecu and the speedo, the only record that can be trusted at that point is would be the service history and car fax.

True, but ECU is a coded part in many modern vehicles. This means you cannot easily take one from an old vehicle and use it elsewhere without special tools.

Oh. And CarFax and the like are only as accurate as the data entered for the vehicle at the last point of entry. Could easily be thousands off if the car hasn’t had service.

I wont buy a car if it has no history. Unless you know the person yoh dont know want has been done. If they kept up on it it shouldnt be 1000s off. Its not a perfect way to buy used cars but it helps. I would never buy salvaged for a daily driver. If its a toy or project sure.

Even with all the maintenance records used is still used and you never no what your going to get. I bought a used tundra a few weeks back . Perfect service history. Tranny started having problems 2 weeks after i bought it.
Luckly fixed under warranty. As i got it from a small lot that offers a 3k 3mth drivetrain warranty.
So even with carfax and having it looked at by a dealership, shit can still go wrong.

I heard theifs use ecus to steal 2 gens.
They swap the ecu and can use a key that matches it. All within a few mins.

I also read the other day that tacoma and tundra both have hacked tech programes out there and with a special cord and laptop you could easily change setting in the ecu.
Been meaning to do some research on this.

Well perhaps, but does that connect to a sensor that sends data to the ECU, or does it send directly to the dash unit? I have no fucking idea. I'm not familiar with that schematic.:bananadead:
