    Not really sure. I had two fall out on my way to RT. Found some 8.8s to get me to RT and picked up some oem bolts from someone there. I didn't lift the truck up to install the 4 new bolts. Just did them one at a time and torqued them. I think it was a day or two later I heard dust shield rubbing the rotor again and this time two of the bolts had sheared in the spindle. My best guess the second time was that because the truck was still on the ground the torque was inaccurate

    That sucks.

    I need a new spindle from my last encounter. One is still sheered inside it. And im pretty sure most the threads got stripped out on one when the bolt ripped out.

    A new spindle is cheaper than what I paid to get those two bolts extracted from the 4x4 shop in Moab. I think they welded nuts to them and backed them out.

    I wonder if there is enough material to upsize the holes a size to fit slightly larger bolts

    I don't have the time to build a jig for test stretching bolts, but I'd like to see how much force it takes to yield a couple thou of stretch. Would be easy for a bolt to back out if the friction on the bottom of the head was alleviated. If they stretch too easily that would key to an undersize bolt (which I think is at least a contributing factor)

    BTW they have a 14mm head not a 14mm thread

    Drop bracket lift and booger welds
    This is why I enjoy the first gen section, so much thought going into a potential issue on first gens. Engineering and math's being applied. It's wonderful. Not like some other sections... hurr durr how do I crawl control.

    They are probably fine for stock level of unsprung weight and no other external forces brought on by a lift. I would also think that the addition of greater side force applied during crawling over rocks and such contribute.

    that im not sure about. The outer ones probaby yes. The inner ones. Doubt it. There isn't much there to begin with. Might be able to go up slightly but not much.

    My tires and your tires are barely bigger than stock and not super heavy. I'm thinking more for the people that push their trucks hard.

    How many of the LT guys have had the bolts shear (all 4) I would assume are rougher than most on them

    Agreed, the design of the joint is what leads to failure, not the fastener selection. Constant cyclic fatigue in tension and shear are what cause the bolts to fail, not a single instance of loading.

    For what it's worth, the bolts are M10x1.25, with a minor thread diameter of ~0.33", and are grade 10.9 (136000 psi yield). Nominal tensile strength is 0.083 in^2*136000=11300 lbs, or 45000 for the whole LBJ. You'd have to drop your truck off the top of a building to generate that kind of load.

    Yes, it contributes to the issue with bolts.

    The ball joint popping out of the socket is 'normal' wear and tear because of the design. When this failure occurs it is because of poor maintenance. The joint was pushed beyond it life span. Unfortunately, because of its design, it is almost impossible to get any warning or to determine if the joint has failed. This makes it prudent to treat them like the timing belt. It has been X number miles, therefor its time to change them.

    For me X = ~90K miles.

    Yeah I was going to do it at 90K with my timing belt. Want to do tie-rods as well. Figured that way if they are still have way decent, i can throw them in my recovery gear box for the trail just in case.
