I have a friend that is redoing his kitchen and wants to get rid of his granite slabs for pretty cheap (~$600 for all of the slabs). There is more than enough granite to do my entire kitchen, maybe a bathroom vanity. QUESTION, would you leave it to pros to cut it or easy DIY? I'm pretty handy, but cutting this type and size of stone would be a first.

Never in a million years would I ever cut my own granite. Something to consider tho..unless it's high end granite or you have the same layout, you may be better off starting from scratch and getting what you really want. Fabrication is not cheap.

Edit: For reference, I just bought 3 slabs (full uncut) to do 2 kitchens and my materials cost was about $1100. Fabrication costs for both kitchens will be about $2700. I live in Phoenix, AZ and this is on the cheap end for sure in this market.

    Appreciate the info!

I was hoping someone here has done it themselves and said it was super easy because my friend has 7 pieces total, 3 of them are large slabs and he only wants $600 for all. Even will throw in a cast iron sink and new faucet.

I bought a could cut off slabs at a used materials yard. I had a local granite guy cut them to size and the hole for the sink mount.

Was a lot cheaper than new, but it was not a huge piece either...

I think it all depends on the quality of Granite that you are getting used vs. a new slab. I just received a price quote for from one shop to cut it to size and they charge $26/sq.ft + $100 for sink cutout + $150 Install. So at this price, its roughly the same cost as a low-grade brand new slab from the same people.

Not sure what we are going to do haha!

Unless they're incredible pieces of granite I'd recommend new. Get exactly what you want to fit your kitchen, instead of fitting your kitchen around your buddys granite colors. Plus avoid any stains from the used slab.

And heavy as well. BIL will have to install a steel beam in his basement to carry the load of a granite counter top on a large island.

Just about done , I've just been knocking out my punch lidt of small jobs to finish up

Bathrooms are just about done tiling , countertops come end of this week and finish electrical and plumbing happens next week

I trimmed out the front door

and our only last major job is forming up the sidewalks but I'm doing that last when there is less in and out foot traffic

Got a quote today on having the drywall work done in my basement, I will DIY everything else, but Drywall is something I want to leave to someone who really knows how to do it well. I was not ready for the quote tho....$4000+ :annoyed:

$4000 kind of seems about right, for the amount of drywall being hung. Ceiling to? Or you doing a standard drop tile style ceiling?

1/2" ultralight on the walls and ceiling, and mold resistant 1/2" in the bathroom. Yea, I don't think this guy is overly unfair in his bid, I just wasnt ready for the total mentally.

I would say that amount is worth it. I don't mind the hanging drywall....its the mudding and sanding.

OZ ....love your work. I think the home owners flopped on the trim though. All that nice work, and the trim seems blah....for how over the top, the house is. Still nice work, just surprised that was the style trim. BTW....does that door catch the sill when fully open?

I am pretty sure I can train a monkey to hang drywall. Just hang the drywall and you will only spend about 1000 bucks for someone to spackle. Hell! ...for that price you could buy a 200$ lift for the ceilings....then sell it later on Craig’s list.

You got alot of utilities up in the ceiling, a drop in would allow you access and save time and money for future repairs and save drywalling cost now.

Whoever is mudding and sanding probably will only do it on drywall they hang.
