Kona side is more touristy because they have the beaches and the resorts. It's more desert like on that side and Hilo side is jungle. I recommend drinking as much as you can and drive as fast as you can to the top of the Mauna Kea, then pass out and puke on yourself LOL kidding.

I check the big island thread sometimes and see people taking their taco's up there to get into the snow.

Lol we will probably do plenty of drinking but not much driving. We are going with another co-worker of hers and splitting a rental car and housing.

They have a conference from like 8-12 every day. Figured check out Mauna Kea one of the days and Kona one of the days. Other than that who knows. Would Hilo be worth checking or or kind of meh?

So I am going to try and limp my truck home from Vegas tomorrow.

Any one have any recommendations on body shops? Preferably someone with 4x4 experience as I am going to want to swap out some parts for better shit.

There is just the park in Hilo and a market. but I'd recommend Akaka Falls outside of Hilo. It's a short trail to see an amazing jungle waterfall and huge bamboo growth. If you had your truck there you could drive down to Waipio Valley but otherwise it's a bit of a hike getting in and out of there. I heard that if you rent a jeep they say you can't take it down there? It's the most majestic beach on the island though. Highly recommended.

You could also drive out and/or hike to green sand beach. Less hiking if you have a 4x4 to get you close. It's supposed to be the only green sand in the world, from what I've heard.

Swimming with the manta rays at night out of Kona is awesome. They have tour boats right there to take you. Pretty awesome to see these huge creatures come out of the dark into the cone of light that the divers set up down below. Little bit creepy sitting in the ocean at night though lol

Thanks for the info. The green sand beach is probably out just since its on the other side of the island. But Akaka Falls and Waipio Valley are definitely a possibility. We dont mind hiking and least Waipio Valley doesnt sound like a long hike at all...least to the beach.

Id looked briefly into getting a 4x4 but pretty much determined it was pointless. Rental companies dont let you take them anywhere but main roads pretty much and the "private" sort of rentals are way more than we would want to pay. We are sort of going on a budget (only having to pay my airfare, food, and rental car)

Waipio is paved but super narrow and the steepest grade road I've seen. Short hike but straight up and down. I've hiked and camped down there a few times. It really feels like paradise, well, I ate mushrooms down there. Watch out for the night marchers, they come down and rub tiger balm on your balls while you sleep.

I decided gears are more important for now. Tires will come eventually.

Are you refering to the use of the inner tube?
If so, i have used tubes from the local big rig shop. Usually ran 20$ a tire for a 35x12.5x16 super swamper, for use in the sand.

    Cool find for sure.
