    I believe the 2001+ first gen use the 921 bulb type meaning they are compatible. Double check your truck takes a 921 reverse bulb. 2000 and earlier will not work.

    I tried this with some cheap bulbs from Lowes . Couldn’t get the bulbs to stay in . Not sure why .

    It is a bit of pain, you need to pry the bulb prongs wider than the socket so the tension holds them in. I pried mine wide enough it was challenging to fit the prongs in at a 45 degree angle, corner to corner. It won’t lock in like a 921 bulb.

    Mods as in spread of the prongs? I’m not sure exactly what you are looking for.

    Thank you, Crash. Yes, the actual spread of the prongs. Perhaps a comparison pic of "new" vs. "spread"...so that others can see how far they need to take it to make the modification work / stay in the socket. That may be too big of a pain...just a thought to help those considering this as an upgrade.

    Those have the same gy6.35 bulb base, but they are the 35w halogen version, not HIR (halogen inferred).

    35w Halogen output 420 lumens
    30w HIR output 750 lumens

    So yes they would work and put out more light than stock, many people do run those bulbs. But the HIRs put out far more light while using less wattage from the reverse circuit and should run cooler.

    Thanks very much, I am happy to have found TW! I'm probably buying a 14 Tacoma tomorrow and so I've been reading up on all the different articles, mods, and tutorials throughout the site.

    Rats, I thought I found a good solution on Amazon because it had IR in the name. Tricksy Amazonians....

    Actually I take that back! I think you are on to something!

    All the 35w gy6.35 bulbs I had seen were halogen. Looking up the Sylvania 35BT4Q part number, it specs the output at 800 lumens. Unlike LED manufactures that vastly overstate output, manufactures like Osram/Sylvania actually hold themselves to real standards. 800 lumens is higher than the 750 lumens of the 30w HIRs, the only way that is possible is with HIR technology. You are correct it does have IR in the name.

    The product looks like a legit domestic HIR solution that will slightly outperform even the HIRs I am running at a slightly higher wattage.

    Thread has been updated with references to the new king of high output reverse light bulbs, Osram gy6.35 35w 800 lumen HIR, finally available domestically.

    Credit goes to @Hemmer for finding the updated HIR.

    Order placed. Will have results next weekend.

    Well in all fairness I've probably spent a handful of hours reading brilliant write-ups on multiple topics on here so prior to that I was clueless! Thanks guys.
