Can anyone tell me what the odd grinding noise that I hear everytime I hit my brakes a little hard? I've noticed that it makes this noise if I hit a pot hole in driveways while going about 20 mph also. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes. Anti lock brake system. Or traction control. Look them up in your manual.

The ABS can get sensitive if your tires are over inflated.

I wasn't just worried because I never heard that sound in my old second gen but it sounds like it's normal now

That sound filled me with dread one day about a month ago. Drove over a curb and I thought I had ground the shit out of my tranny or differential. Lol

Yea just a little gravel on my driveway and it kicks on, if i turn while hitting a speed bump or dip in the road while on the brakes it kicks on...pretty annoying.

Yeah, I think the grinding/pulsing sensation is meant to deter you from mashing it and locking it up unless in an emergency.

I would almost bet there is something wrong with the drums if they want to lock on something as simple as gravel and the ABS wants to kick in.

I drove trucks for most of my life (minis included) and i never had rear that wanted to lock outside of dogs or cars jumping out in in front of me and even then sometimes fronts would lock first. I've never owned a truck with ABS but drive lots of them at work.

My Tacomas rears (different than yours, I admit. Mine has the goofy load adjuster that doesn't work) are the worst proportioned of ANY vehicle I've ever owned. Goes for '60s-'70s cars also and some of those cars didn't even have power brakes.

Shouldn't the light for trac. control or ABS flash when this happens telling you what is going on? It used to on other cars back when this stuff started coming out. You hit ice, trac control would blink, you slam on brakes, ABS would blink.

This seems odd to me. I've slammed on my brakes before and didnt get a grinding noise, it also never happens when I hit a pothole.

Are we sure it's ABS? My ABS only kicks on when slipping really.

Sometimes a bump or pothole will activate ABS, there was a manhole cover that used to get mine to activate.

If you are applying power and one tire hits something slippery it will spin ever so slightly .. The truck's wheel speed sensors will detect that the tires are turning at different speeds and apply the brakes. On a TRD OR like mine it will only brake the spinning tire IIRC, and it makes the grinding sound. Same principle occurs if you are braking on a slippery surface that causes a wheel to lock even for a moment.
