Just checking to see if I missed anything exciting. Pretty quiet in this thread.

Stopped into the Local HF store to check out the Vulcan welders. I am amazed at the quality. I wish the store would let me run one thru wringer. I got a sneaky suspicion that these are going to be a very good welder.

I know they have an unconditional 1 year warranty, but I just can't bring myself to buy one only to return it right away. Just seems wrong.

Im waiting for the Chucke2000 review on the omnipro version. But he did a quick review of one of the other models and was happy with it (for the money!) Everything I have seen so far has said they are good for the money machines. Have some quirks but again...cost comes into play.

Go buy one all ready !!

I would but I really have no need and can`t think of a reason why I even want to play with One

If you do ask about How the Warranties are handled Just swap out machines and they give you a new one ??

Bummer I stripped out my wire drive tension using that pipe wrench Can I buy another housing ??

    Interesting questions like that.

So I got some new flap discs to clean up my smoker, but a lot of the surfaces are not cleanin up with the disc.

I did wipe them down w acetone to clean them, then wire wheeled. I think I just rubbed acetone into the metal by wire wheeling it...:anonymous:

The grinding wheel brings it to bare metal, but isn’t as nearly as polished as the 120 grit flap discs.

I’m just trying to understand what’s going on. Did the acetone / wire wheel burn the bridge for using the flap disc?

I’m hoping the paint will even out the surface? That way I don’t have to grind, then flap wheel

The acetone evaporates. It's not going into the metal. In regards to the flap disc, shouldn't matter what you go over. A flap disc should smooth out bare metal until the disc is warn.

If you're using a flap disc over old paint that's a different story. You can load a flap disc with paint. In that case a wire wheel is best used first, then a disc.

    Thanks for responding:fistbump:

The metal hasn’t been painted. I bought it fresh from the supplier. I think it has only had stuff on it from the supplier so it won’t rust.

The surfaces that I hadn’t rubbed w acetone seem to be cleaning up fine. Doesn’t take much pressure to reduce it to bare metal.

    I don’t understand why it’s behaving like this:notsure:

What grit are your flap discs ??

Remember all flap discs are not created equal.

Just what are you trying to remove ??

You do know they make discs for removing Rust and paint without base metal

I have only ever used Acid to clean Aluminum

They’re 120 grit from benchmark abrasives.

They’re cleaning the tube and angle fine, but not doing much for the 10 gauge plate.

I’m just trying to get it all to bare metal so the paint sticks well.

None of the metal is rusted

Hmmm I think it’s all mill scale:(

Blueish Gray is what google is coming up with. Another link I read was that flap discs just gloss over mill scale. God this stuff is evil

It looks so consistent I figured it was a coating.

I've had good luck using "The Works" toilet cleaner. It is Hydrochloric acid (weakened), but it does cut the mill scale. I use a pressure washer to remove the acid and liberated mill scale. I mix it 50/50 with water.

It will off gas and it will bring you to your knees if you get a snoot full. Do this outside.

It's deff not the acetone doing anything. I'd have to see a pic to see what you're talking about.

I went to the garage to snap a pic, but it’s too dark out.

Here are some other pics until the morning. I’m guessing it’s mill scale.

I see why people hate it.

    6BAF6711-7763-4C01-982A-3D057D32B2FB.jpg

    B9C1CD2F-62C7-4641-B774-BF62C54A97BB.jpg

So on th second pic you can see where I ground down the welds to clean them up. The rest of the plate is not shiney or lustrous. More of a plain smooth blue / gray.

I think I found my new enemy.

I may try to rub it clean w some chems tomorrow. Or just grind forever

    Yep, mill scale.

Hit it with HCL, rinse, watch the whole thing flash tarnish, then hi temp paint it.

Just wheel her off to you see silver. I have fucked up wrists because of the pipe welding trade. But the attention to detail pays off. You'll get it.looking real good though. 90% there

Well my knife has had all but one of the screws missing for like a year and something else broke on it that keeps the two sides apart enought for the blade to open and so i could barely open it when i was holding it because i would squeeze the sides into the blade and pinch it. I set the machine for 18 ga which was prolly a little hot but it was just spotsl welds and thats as low as my cheat sheet went for .035. It should hold for a awhile now.

Oh im pretty sure the very out side is aluminium too so im glad it didnt get terribly screwed up

Finally picked up a Miller multimatic 215 with the tig kit after welding with Miller millermatic 212 for years. Need to make a cart for it and 2 bottles. Anyone have any pictures and measurments of theirs to give me some ideas? Probably be 2 or 3 level so I can throw a plasma on the bottom.
