I was wondering how much of a hassle is it to do the por-15 to the frame. How hard is it to take the cab off. Or is there an easier way to coat the frame under the cab. If I have to take the cab off will I have to disconect a bunch of the engine bay stuff? This will be the first time I've ever coated a frame. When I do this, I'd like to plug the frame holes. What should I use to plug them? Can I get premade plugs that I weld in or do I have to make them myself. Thank you in advanced.

    Wow.....that's a pretty major project.

You have a 1st gen and PRE 2000 - I'm guessing you have the original frame? Or did you have someone install a new frame? Have you had the frame inspected?

The frames rot from the inside out - so, I'm not sure applying POR15 on the outside is going to prevent the rot from the inside. POR15 is great stuff but its hellish expensive and the 'rusted' areas drink it up which would require multiple coats.

I can't really say anything else - unless we know the condition of your frame currently....

Yeah I've got a 1997. Original frame as far as I know. Frame hasn't been inspected since ive owned it. From my inspection( not a professional obviously) but it seems solid. I used the hammer method. Problem is even if the frame under the recall I couldn't do it since it's past the 15 years. Also don't got the 5 grand to fork out for a new frame if I needed one.

Would it be easier if I took some pictures of the frame aswell?

POR-15 is nice but like said it doesn't help with the inside. I have done both my jeep and the 4runner. The jeep pulled the whole frame sand blasted and painted. On the 4runner I set out to do this also and realized it was way to much work. So what I did is unbolted the cab, engine, tranny, X-members, fuel tank, radiator, lines, etc, and seperated from the frame using jacks and jack stands. At first I thought brushing on the paint was stupid but it's amazing how that stuff works and covers with a brush. Start at the front and work back. Does it get 100% no, but I bet I got 90% of it. It looks good and it's covered that's what is most important. As far as the plugs I used rubber plugs and some (I know this sounds stupid but) electrical tape. Then you can remove them and clean out the inside of the frame in the summer or "fluid film" for the winter.

Pretty sure the other 10% is the inside of the frame. I am thinking of spraying a zinc coating, something from eastwood, inside there. should be set after that.

you should not permanently plug the holes in the frame. If you ever need to get access to grease or clean inside or whatever, you can't. Also, these holes, they allow air in and moisture to dry. If plugged, it traps it in, making your frame rust even faster from the inside out

Try to find big square rubber plugs, or make your own. If needs be, you remove them and put them/glue them back in place afterwards

Also, it is very important you treat the inside of your frame as well. A good layer of grease or fluid film will do it

    Yeah
Fluid film once a year and you’ll never need to do this.

What is fluid film? Never heard of it. I'd like to do something asap. To protect the frame. Next year I'm complety take the truck apart down to the frame so I can repaint the entire truck. But I was hoping to do something this year before I go drive it for winter. Something to protect the frame. How does the fluid film work?

It’s great stuff. Rust prevention and a lubricant. Smells like shit though. I spray my entire undercarriage once a year.

Can I just spray this suff on the frame without any prep? Basically just grab a can or whatever and spray? Also how do I get the inside the frame?

Also to do the inside and out of the truck. How much would I need to get roughly? Since you can get it as a spray. I would I need to still take the cab/box off or just point with the nozzle and spray front to back? Would this also help the bottom of my cab/rocker panels?

I do have the old frame coating peeling/flaking all over the frame. Should I just pick it off or not worry about it and spray over that?

We have stuff in Canada called rust check. It's like fluid film. You buy it in a spray can and it has a tube like wd40. It's a thick oil. Spray inside all the frame holes. Up, down back and front. It's stops more rust from developing. Also rinse the crap out of the inside of the frame first. Get all the mud and dirt out. There are two drain holes near the back for water to drain out. I use a wine bottle washer.... It's angled so you can aim it where you want.

What do I use to get the dirt out of the frame?

You should remove any loose rust and flaking paint, to make sure it gets to the frame and adheres to it.

To do the inside, you can use something like this, it's made for hard to reach enclosed spaces, like frames. It's a long straw that has an end that sprays 360 degrees
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dinitrol-E...products-60-/253146167896?hash=item3af0affa58

of course, you must clean the inside of the frame first, to remove any debris that may be in the way. To do that, what you can do is send some pressurized water in through the square holes on the frame rails, the grime will exit through drain holes on the bottom of the rails (if you have some. If you don't, drill some) But it is not a good idea at this time of the year because your frame won't dry and the fluid film won't adhere.

What you can do instead is tape a long flexible hose on the end of a a shop vac vacuum hose and insert it through every hole on the frame untill you get nothing.

Thank you. That's kinda what I was figuring because it is winter. Or atleast here it is covered in that white stuff. How effective will the shop vacation method work?

Also for putting this fluid film all over the frame. Just basically take a light sand paper just to remove the flaking pieces/ surface rust and just coat it generously? Will I need to do this more then once this winter just because I won't have any paint/coating on the frame since it's all flaking off? Or will the one time be significant for winter?

The nozzle is that for the spray cans? So it goes all around in a 360 to get a full coating? Or is it for washing the frame?
