Handheld for what uses? I have a eTrex 20x that I like a lot for cycling and hiking and a GPSMAP 78 that I got for the motorcycle and use in my truck.

Using in the truck while exploring forest service roads and other off road points of interest.

For that I'd look at the GPSMAP. The reason I chose it originally was for the motorcycle because it's not too big, display is OK sized, it's waterproof (hopefully never an issue in my truck) but most importantly it still has the old Garmin waterproof 4-pin power connector and an external antenna connector. I've been really happy with it in the truck with the internal antenna, though.

The nice thing about the old Garmin power connector is it's designed to accept 12V directly so you can wire it directly into the truck easier than trying to deal with a USB connector and its more robust.

The TRX7 looks cool, but different class of receiver IMO. It's got a battery but it's not really designed to be a handheld. If I was considering something with a 7" screen like that I'd just do with a tablet with Gaia or similar.

Yea it’s not handheld but I don’t guess handheld is a must. Does Gaia/similar have off road trails like the TRX7?

I'm not an expert here, I just use Garmin handhelds. I'm stuck in the dark ages with a laptop that stays at home. :) Gaia and Backcountry Navigator I assume let you use just about any topo map you want and you can use GPX or KML tracks. I think you get all the functionality of a GPS receiver in that respect. Plus you can use Google Maps or Waze or Avenza for PDF maps. So it's super flexible. I don't know if you have access to the Magellan and Garmin ecosystems with user uploaded trails, though I think Traildamage.com would be just as good for OHV trails.

Nope. Not sure about the TRX7 but I doubt it. An iPad or Android tablet could. Gaia is just an app, you have the regular functionality of the tablet otherwise. It could run music, photos, web, etc. along with navigation. That's why I say the TRX7 is neat but for $400 you get a lot more with a plain old tablet.

I’ve got an iPad Pro, would google maps work without WiFi or cellular network?

Is it a WiFi-only iPad or one that can do cellular data? The WiFi-only need an external GPS device but the ones with cellular have GPS built-in and will report a position using the internal GPS. If you have that doesn't have GPS built in there are ways around that. The Dual XGPS150 (or similar Bluetooth GPS), a Bad Elf GPS dongle, etc.

So I’d need to know my destination beforehand?

I don’t like that because i just roam lol. Would buying a 4G iPad and not activating it with an app be a better solution?
