i was not expecting tundra performance but did not expect less performance than my 2008 4.0 i traded in. IMO it is the Atkinson 'crap' cycle.

What performance are you lacking in?

in my 2008 4.0, little 1 wheel drive, if at a stop and gave it too much gas the tire would spin. in my 3.5 can not get it to do that. this is just a measure of the lack of power i don't go around burning rubber. another example when stopped and waiting for cross traffic to clear so i can turn right, when a gap comes and i start my turn much less responsive then my old 4.0. my saving grace for my 3rd gen is the ECT mode makes it feel like my 2008.

So spinning tires is important to you? Try turning off the TC, it cuts power when it senses you slipping.

Maybe your loafers are too light to press the accelerator of the 3.5.

Might I suggest you try using one of these: " . " instead of typing out "period" at the end of every sentence?

Also, you're wrong (my opinion, of course, take or leave). The 2GR-FKS is an excellent engine for this truck. I love mine and many others love theirs. The best aspect of this engine is its dual nature with VVT. It can get mpgs when you want them and it has power when you need it. Now you may be referring to the angst people have voiced regarding the pairing of this engine with the 6AT. I wouldn't know about that because I got a manual. Still, if you look into it, there are ways to make this engine and the transmission play nicer together. These sort of problems frequently occur in the first couple of years of a new model or generation.

Remind me again... how much difference in power is there from the 4.0 to the 3.5?

I am 2 weeks in on my 2017 Tacoma and I am perfectly happy with it. I don’t understand these threads. Sounds like some people needed or expected the performance of a full size truck and settled for a midsize.

    3rd Gen 3.5L 2GR-FKS: 207 kW (278 hp) at 6000 rpm and 359 N·m (265 lb·ft) at 4600 rpm.

    2nd Gen 4.0L 1GR-FE: 236 hp (176 kW) at 5200 rpm with 266 lb·ft (361 N·m) of torque at 4000 rpm

So you can see, Toyota greatly decreased overall horsepower by +42...uhhh...ok, I guess that's a big increase. My bad.

Well, then...its the uuuuuge decrease in torque with the new engine that sucks. 1 lb-ft. That's like...the weight of a whole shoe sitting on the end of a paint stirrer. THAT'S what's killing us! (Drip...drip...drip... anyone have a towel... puddle of sarcasm on aisle 6)

He's not, it's still just his opinion. I have an auto and it is fine. I even tow with it through hills and shit, ugh...period.

It drives "different".... people equate "different" with "problematic".

They also complain that the automatic transmission shifts automatically. I guess the transmission should know what gear the driver wants but not require any driver intervention to limit what gear the driver wants. Toyota Engineers are to blame for not testing enough so that the transmission mind meld is not adequate.

guess some of us just have a difference of opinion on the lack of power compared to the 2nd gen 4.0. that is what this forum is for.

My 2016 TRD Pro has nearly enough power for everything I thow at it. If I could get 10 - 15% more when towing I'd be very happy. I haven't added a cold air intake or better exhaust yet. I'm hoping that would help a little. I'll probably turbo if the kit ever comes out.

My wife, twice passed big rigs this weekend pulling a 23 foot Airstream at 80 mph and scared the crap out of me, but it was still accellerating. I'm still trying to learn a technique to merge back onto mountain roads with the trailer after turnouts to let crazy CA drivers by.

I use ECT and S mode when towing. I bought the shift sense module and will be installing this weekend. Gives my a couple more transmission mapping options.

I wouldn't suggest going 80mph with that kind of a load. Just sayin...

Yeah, my wife has a lead foot. I drove the rest of the trip. I once saw a F350, trailer and ski boat scattered all over the place from what I assume was excessive speed.

On the up side, the trailer and ebrake handled flawlessly. Got my hitch and trailer brake dialed in. Planning on adding rear air bags for an even better handling rig. Tacos are great for modding.
