I have a 98 Tacoma SR 5 V6 manual transmission. The engine computer needs replaced. The old computer I took out is for a 4 cylinder engine. Can I put the same model number computer back in or find a 6 cylinder computer?

Going to need the same computer for your year/model Tacoma to avoid issues...I don't know if a 6 cyl one would work and if it did, would probably throw a ton of codes or work in limp mode at best. The numbers put out of a 4cyl motor won't match up to what a 6cyl ECU is programmed for.

Ok but what I don't understand is the truck is a 6 cylinder but the old computer is for a 4 cylinder. Truck has ran fine for a few years with that 4 cylinder computer. So do I put the same 4 cylinder computer back in or get a 6 cylinder like the truck is suppose to have

Oh weird...I misunderstood the first post. I have no idea then lol, I didn't think you could run ECUs from different size motors but I guess I was wrong.

What is the part number on the computer you took out?

I would replace with same ECU if it ran fine. Why are you replacing anyway and how do you know it's from a 4 Cylinder?
    Just curious

Yep, it's only listed for the 3RZ-FE, 97-99. It doesn't seem like it would work very well with a V6...

Really dumb question, but are you sure it's a V6, 3.4 liter engine, or do you have the 3RZ-FE, 2.7 liter?

Unless this truck was some type of a conversion, that is not the original computer. I am pretty sure if you give Toyota the vin number they can tell you what part number computer you should have. My guess is that if it ran ok with the one you have it will run even better with the correct computer.

Something is Fubar for sure .

That ECM unless some of the plugs were repinned should not even work

Even the plugs between the 3.4 and 3RZ engines on the ECM are different

It makes no sense unless the OP was told he has a 3.4 and has the 3RZ instead I see so many strange things.

Usually computers from different engines also have physically different plugs and it's not possible to swap them. I think we are going to need pictures. Engine bay shot, computer label and plug side.
