Just leased a 2017 sr5 dclb in super white. I went to wash it for the first time and noticed when I was done that the whole truck has a ton of orange peel on it, the rear door jambs are dry and the wheel well mouldings are dry and very porous. Also the lower part of the front bumper is like this as well. Anyone else have these issues?

Orange peel is in locations where rock chips happen the most.

My 17 super white is very similar. Tons of orange peel and dry in other areas. When I picked mine up from the dealer it had all plastic still on it. Under that was horrible quality paint. Overspray, found a couple places with dirt/specs in the paint, couple high spots. Had to claybar/buff and wetsamded a couple small spots right off the bat. Coming from VW/Audi/Porsche was really bummed by the paint quality.

White is a one stage paint so you will see more Orange peel... on your mettalic paints it's a 2 stage paint so won't see it as bad..

    None as of yet
there is intentional orange peel along the bottom of the doors and bed side panels. Its thicker to help with rock chips. anywhere else though and my paint is glass smooth. Any dirt specs in the paint could very easily be rail dust from transport and can be taken out with a clay bar very easily.

It's all about expectations. I have paint on my truck. I'm good with that. I didn't have any expectation that a pickup truck was going to have a great finish. It's a truck. It' going to get scratched. And dented. And mud and dirt. And briars. And bikes. And sticks. It's not a vehicle that paint finish is an important must have...
In 3...2...1... someone is going to say "It cost $35K! I expect it to be flawless!" News flash... in 2016 the average price for all new vehicles is $35K. $35K gets you average nowadays.

My 2015 4Runner had the same thing and so does my 2017 Taco. I believe Toyota intentionally puts a thicker coat of paint in those areas like others have already said.

O40 is not one stage. There's an ED coat, primer coat, base coat and clear coat. The primer coat is white. Maybe that's why people think it's a single stage application

And yes....there is an anti chip material applied to the rocker areas before to the primer coat.

That material is thick by nature and has a texture to it

I know there were some clear coat issues with some Tundras and Sequoias a few years back. But I can't think of a single 040 application where there was no clear coat applied. The CC is necessary to give the 040 is luster. 040 base is actually quite flat in sheen without it.

I think people just assume it's "1 stage" because the white primer gives the illusion that it's not there when sanded.

Certain whites like Blizzard Pearl (070) have the base and mica together as a single application. But that is applied over a white primer. So even those colors are not true one stage

Ah, makes sense. I noticed that and sort of assumed that's what that was, based on the distribution. I haven't walked around with a magnifying glass, but my paint job looks tight to me.

I don't know that VW/BMW should be some kind of benchmark. We had a new Turbo Beetle years back that was horrible. It had visible flaws and I'm no paint guy who would generally notice such things. Funny story about that car: It was a bad lease (way upside down on the back end and we went over mileage). The build had terrible quality on that thing (Hecho en Mexico--I'm sure they make some great cars, but not this one!). The body was seriously just falling off in most places with panels flapping all over the place. My wife and I were poor as dirt and we had to turn in the lease. I was sure we were going to get nailed on it if I didn't do something, so I bought a big Costco tube of zip ties. I spent an entire afternoon zip-tying the shit out of that thing. I probably used 50-60 zip ties at least. It looked pretty tight, I must say, if you didn't start crawling around underneath too much. We didn't owe a thing other than mileage overage! I wonder if anyone ever discovered my handiwork?
