My wife noticed this on the desert sand that I test drove. Salesman said it was intentional for rock chip prevention. I suppose that’s the reason....

Uh, yep! Definitely this. The more orange peel the better IMO. I drive a truck. That truck goes down gravel roads and into mud and all over the place. The tougher the better.

Interesting. I'm on my 3rd Toyota - all of them have been some form of Silver. Boring for some, yes, but dressed up with a lot of black accessories they always look sharp and I've never ever had any paint issues with my silver Toyotas. My truck I've now had for a year barely has any minor scratches after lots of use. I am religious about using either McGuires quick detailer or 303s quick detailer which probably keeps it pretty well protected. I'd bet if you gave it a good wash, wax, then keep some decent detailer or spray wax on frequently it wouldn't be nearly as bad. Paint is the one thing I always felt Toyota's nail in comparison to the (well running, but) terrible looking paint chipped Hondas you see everywhere ;P

BMWs have a lot of orange peel as well.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUqKUbmdOr0

Look at the final finish of the 6 series paint job (4:57 mark). Orange peel everywhere.

The only real difference is that japanese paint is softer than german (easier to buff though) and that there is an extra layer on the lower panels that looks ugly, but is there to protect against chips.

I could be wrong here but I've been told by multiple bodyshop people and Toyota reps that 0040 paint is SINGLE STAGE with an integrated clearcoat. Whereas the metallic and pearl paints are 2-stage with clear coat applied separately.

Our onsite bodyshop will NOT wetsand 0040 paint because according to them they will not wet sand single stage paint... the clear coat is too thin.

This was also posted to the tundra forums a while back from a Toyota rep:

    "Dear Mr. XXXXXXX:

Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

We appreciate the opportunity to address your inquiry.

The Super White paint applied to your Tundra is a single stage paint coating. Vehicles painted with non-metallic colors have no clear coat finish. Paint colors that are available in a metallic or pearl will have a clear coat finish.

We hope this information has been helpful.

If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us http://www.toyota.com/help/contactus.html.

    Sincerely,

    Ivette Moreno
    Toyota Customer Experience"

But I'm not 100% sure either way so I could be wrong.

I promise 040 has a clear coat. 070 which is another common Toyota white is an integrated base/mica clear coat combination applied over white primer.

A more expensive car is no indication of a better paint job, sometimes the opposite. Read some detailing blogs about the horrendous factory paint work on high end cars, Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini you name it.

My truck is black, and I was expecting some issues when I picked it up. I was SHOCKED at how good the paint looked, almost no swirls from washing, no scratches or chips, no buffing holograms or anything. It doesn’t look quite as good 14 months later, but only minor swirling that’s hard to avoid after that amount of time and washes.

That's because the dealer didn't "install" halograms and swirls. Never let the dealer touch your paint if you can help it. I told them not to touch my paint, just remove the tape. Also never let them wash your truck if they have a machine on site. When I had my mercedes I never let them run it through their machine either (my tech friend called it the scratch wash).

As stated above, Japanese paint is soft. Even the dealer admitted that. We looked at a few darker cars on the lot..all of them swirled and hazed with angled sunlight. Black is by far the worst, while silver is the best at hiding it.

Hahaha yup exactly. My truck was a dealer trade so even though I asked mine not to do anything I had no idea what the original dealer had done. I usually remember to ask them not to wash it, but I’ve forgotten once or twice and they’ve hand washed it. I think that’s where most of my swirls came from as I 2 bucket wash but it’s not that big a deal to me.

I understand the stone guard on the bottom that's not an issue. I have owned 5 Toyotas all differ colors, this is by far the worse orage peel and dullest paint I have seen yet. It's a truck I get that nd it's $35k I get that I wanted to see who else had these issues. I was also wondering if the door jambs were dry as mine are. Weird. Just didnt seem like toyota quaility.

Really? I have a 17 TRD OR ACC and the paint is fine. They double the paint along the rocker panels for rock damage. Maybe it's those painted in Baja.

I meant as far as defects. My 335i’s paint was flawless. My Tacoma came with swirls from the factory, paint bubbles, metallic shavings under the paint and some other things I can’t remember. However those issues were taken care of and I had my vehicle paint corrected and ceramic coating. Now it’s a lot better.

The fact that it had swirls would be the first red flag make me think it was repaired before delivery. Ive out a paint gauge on brand new cars and got readings with huge variances on panels so i personally know it happens.

My current Super White Taco was produced in Baja. There is one small base coat sag in the interior lower b-pillar. 99 out of 100 people wouldn't even notice it. Other than that....it looks great.

I'll also add...I've had two Super White Tacos. One built in Texas the other Mexico. A SW Matrix XRS produced in Canada and an xA produced in Japan. All were the same 040 color and all were fine with no real issues.

The Japanese produced xA had a base coat sag on the front face of the left side strut tower in the engine compartment and a clear coat sag on the right side of the hatch jam. Again...most people would never even notice something like that.

I got a hit and run on me and the shop checked all the panels for paint thickness. Nothing was suspicious. I think the swirls came from them doing a shifty job detailing it.

Oh I gotcha. Yeah probably crappy make ready. I had them on my truck too in a couple of spots. I do have a couple spots with trash in the paint too, but you kinda gotta expect that. I don't let it bother me.
