Oh no... I am probably going to spend a lot of time on the snowmobile forum today instead...

 

My father in law wanted to borrow my Billy Goat 10hp push blower yesterday to clean his yard, so when he went to my house to grab it, he cleaned my yard first.

 

Morning all, weekends do not last long enough anymore.

With all this talk of flurries and snow I wanted to ask what do you guys typically do for weighting the bed down? It's my first full winter with the truck so I thought to get some insight on the topic. I'll be heading back and forth from ME for skiing, so I'm assuming having some sand or concrete bags would be beneficial. Better secure them over the axle or at the tailgate?

 

I used to do weight over the rear axle, but having to take it out whenever I need to carry something large in the bed all winter is a pain so I don't bother any more.

The '84 gets sandbags between the wheel wells as a counterweight for the plow, and I use a 2x4 box to keep them in place. And I shovel snow in/out if I need more or less weight. Back when I drove a little 2wd Nissan I just used snow as a weight all winter long. Cheap, easy, and I didn't have to worry about it coming through the back window into my head if I ditched it.

Yep, exactly. I used to do 2 bags of the tube sand but now I don't bother. Just deal with the ass end being squirrly.

Yeah, it's not worth the effort for me. Whenever the weather's really bad I'm probably driving the '84 anyway. And a light touch on the throttle keeps the rear end where it's supposed to be 90% of the time. The rest of the time, I'll just switch it into 4x4.


Edit- And the GF doesn't even take my new truck when it snows now; she takes her RAV4 instead. So it really doesn't get driven in the snow all that often.

I figure the mileage I lost with sand in the bed was probably a wash with just using 4WD a bit more often.

 

I used tractor weights at the front of the bed and built a wood box to keep them there. After I put the cap on, I stopped putting additional weight in the bed, the cap is heavy enough. Whatever you do, don't put weight behind the rear axle. That last thing you want to do is unweight the front. It's much more important to be able to turn and stop than it is to go.

 

Took the day off to bring my Mom into the city for a follow up appointment and was out early this morning. Realized someone sideswiped the wife's Jeep in the last day or two in a parking lot.

This is the second time it's been hit in a parking lot. Have to call insurance and see if it makes more sense to pay out of pocket or file a claim. I can't win when it comes to this stuff.

Yep. It's funny because the only reason I even looked is that I took it last night and hit a bump weird and wanted to look at the wheel. The wheel was nicked which may or may not have been related but then I looked at the door. Thought it was a weird bird dropping at first but then realized it had been hit. Tried to buff everything out but realized the metal was rippled a bit.

So annoying as they hit the fender and doors.

I enjoy not having any commitments. I'll get a German Shep one day when I stop travelling but for now I'm gone too much.
