A different sort of rust issue.

I read through the 95-2k toyota's rust issue thread, but still haven't seen the answer to my question. I DON'T want toyota buying my truck back [strong sentimental value] however i do live in CT where we use plenty of salt and sand on our roads. My frame is pretty rusted, it has surpassed normal surface rust, however no perforation. What can i do to stifle the rusting, or better yet is there anything toyota will do under the new 15 year contract? Gratitude.

 

Fluid Film. I live in MN and deal with the salt and subsequent rust. FF is a low cost way to deal with surface-moderate rust. Skol.

 

I would take it to a shop and have them inspect the frame - similar to what toyota would do during the 'rust inspection'.

The frame rust warrantee - is because the frames are rusting from the inside out. You can't see it. Toyota taps along the side of the frame and 'listens'. If its bad enough, you might be able to poke a hole through it.

Basically what I'm saying is.... Why waste money on rust protection and/or prevention if the frame is that bad? You're better off putting money towards replacing the frame completely (by another shop or doing it yourself) or take it to a dealer and get a good chunk of $$ for it while you still can.

Replacing my frame cost Toyota over $11,000. The mechanic saw the bill sent to Toyota.
Expensive to do a frame swap.
Really worth it?
You can't get the money back when selling.
Better to take the buy-back if the frame fails.
The longer you wait, the lower the KBB becomes.

 

This is true. I did the math, and even if I wait 5 years (The last year I can cash into the recall) I will still be turning a profit. I suppose that's my best bet. I bought the tacoma well under kbb and this winter was pretty cruel to the frame. So if i turn it in now, I know i will get more $$ than if i waited the 5 years till the offer expires; i just rather hold on to it so i don't have to go through the troubles of buying a new car, going through the payments, new insurance, and all other worries... as a full time student, I don't have the time/money for too much trouble
