I don't have any animals. Realistically, I couldn't have a dog. I leave at 6 AM and best case scenario I'm back home at 4:30, often later.

Kids are most definitely not in my future.

I leave the house at 6:30 and get home at 5:30 and I have a dog. She does fine, but I do feel bad about the amount of time that we're not home. She's older, though. At this point she's perfectly content to spend all day sleeping in front of the woodstove with a break around 1 to bark at the mailman.

Yeah, I'd feel bad about being gone all the time.

Sometimes after work I'll stop elsewhere too and there are days I'm gone for 14-15 hours straight. I just don't have to worry about when I can get home for the dog.

Our newest pup is becoming a brat lol. She pushed aside the gate and ran to the top of the stairs and stayed there, while our other pup sat at the bottom of the stairs I'd imagine saying something like "what are you doing up there, we aren't supposed to be there, If I don't give into temptation and just stay here I might get a cookie". Plus this lab mix like never chills unless she's waiting to be allowed to eat, or it's late and we are watching movies. Otherwise it's like she has turrets or is losing her mind. She does give plenty of kisses though.

I usually remove my hitch when not in use.
It's been real dark lately ... So I made the hitch more visible .... I hope .

Any of you replace your water heater recently? Have an old 80 gallon stone lined tank that is failing. Seems like I can get a plumber to purchase and install a 55 gal. electric one for $900-$1K, but I have no clue if that is a reasonable cost?

Now I *could* do it myself and haven't ruled it out yet, but plumbing is the one household thing I do not like to do myself. Do something wrong and it can get very expensive, very quickly.

No problems, just testing the bump stops!
I haven't done one myself, but I would tackle it without thinking twice about it. I'm also fairly confident in doing my own plumbing and electrical work though. I'd find out how much the water heater cost so you can back into install vs. purchase price of the unit.

I've replumbed toilet flanges and ran new pex lines for all my showers and haven't felt lost before, but the water heater for some reason seems a bit more intimidating. If I was going to do it myself, I would try and use sharkbite connections - pex lines to the water tank and get a couple connectors from plastic to copper to feed back into the main lines. But I am no plumber and do not know if its better to run all copper. If so, I can still do it (soldered in a couple exterior hose bibs), but need to sharpen my skills before connecting into the main house lines.

It is pretty straight forward with using the flux and sanding the pipe smooth, but again - mess it up and make a super mess.

Personally, I only used Pex in my house in areas that are exposed to view and running over the unfinished basement. I would not bury Pex in a wall (I just don't trust it enough). I used Pex where I did because it will expand a lot more before bursting than copper. As a general rule though, I prefer using copper.

The systems themselves are not overly complicated. They may seem intimidating at face value but they're very simple systems, especially the electric ones.

X2. Soldering pipe for plumbing is almost absurdly easy as long you're using clean copper.

I replaced mine. It was off the boiler and was 40 years old. I didn't want to use oil to heat water all summer, so I bought an electric unit instead. I also put it in a separate section of the basement where I already had old washer hookups that I repurposed and I moved an old 240 line that I think the last guy used for a welder. It was closer to the kitchen and bathroom so I eliminated 30 or so feet of hot water pipe that went to the old tank. Took me a couple hours.

I expect it would have been even easier if I was replacing an existing one in the same place.

The newer solders have made it a little more difficult. They took all the good stuff out of the solder. Still pretty easy, torches are pretty decent these days.
