If you decide to go new OEM, Camelback Toyota (in Phx) is offering it for $525 shipped. This includes iTREs and boots. Seems like a pretty good price to me. I think this includes a TW discount of some sort.

    Have you seen this thread?

Have you ever heard the saying: "Some people are so afraid of failing, they don't even try"? In this case, failing would be defined as getting a ding, a scratch, a pin stripe (or 2) or a little mud on their pretty truck. :poking:

Awesome, thanks for the link Mike. The price seems pretty fair to me for a brand new rack.

I appreciate that offer. It looks like they have a free shipping option on their website. No need to go out of your way

Well, I think I finally found a more comfortable place to live. Double car garage w/ nice driveway. Not much for a yard but Ash can't stay outside in my current place anyways because he figured out how to get under the fence. 6 month lease with month to month after that. $600 with w/s/g include. We pay for electricity/heat. Just need to source a few cords of wood and I am hoping our foresters can help me with that.

oh god i have so many radio questions now. wtf. I literally can't read enough, and im just trying to figure out which channels/repeaters to program into the radio for general group communication and emergency situations in the back country.

Well like I want to scan through and listen to any emergency frequencies (obviously you can’t transmit) from what I read police use hf? So they’re in the 30 range. But also some channels in the 130s and low 140s I saw were for local emergencies.

I want to find the local S&R channel and program that in.

Those are self explanatory it seems.

But programming in the repeater channels, since on these you have to program the input and output.
I’ve done reading how to use them but I’m a bit unsure. So if I wanted to use a repeater to call for help, I have the local repeaters input and output programmed in the radio, and I (ideally) would know which repeater I’m the closest to given the area we are in, and id change to that channel and hail that channel?
I couldn’t use the repeater to boost my transmission to say, an emergency or S&R channel right?

Looking I see a few repeaters in Jackson...it looks like one (in the same location with the same call sign ) is on both uhf and vhf...what’s the benefit of one or the other?

The most basic question... how do I pick a channel for my buddies and I to use that isn’t taken up by anything else lol. It seems like there are so many designated channels getting a quiet one is impossible

No, I haven’t seen it yet

For emergency services you can often hear the dispatcher but not the individual cars or people as they tent to have a speacial encoder. I'll look at what mt local ones are and you can look and see.

Repeaters are what they say they are. A repeater. So they have a dedicated frequency. If you want to broadcast on one you have to use its frequency. Then as it receives your input in simultaneously broadcasts it out to extend your range greatly. But you can't tell it what frequency to rebroadcast on. So you will be hoping someone will be monitoring that repeater to help get you help. Sometimes multiple repeaters are linked together to extend your range for hundreds of miles. Like the ones in the big horn basin are all linked so you can talk from billings to Casper damn near.

Ufh and vhf just means they have two repeaters at the same location that are different frequency. Due to the wave length of them. 2m vs 70cm it'll have differ range and differ repose to terrain. So knowing both can be handy. But only people monitoring the uhf will hear you if you broadcast uhf.

As for the channels. All you need to do is simplex. Which is a fancy way of saying set it up like a walkie talkie. The reason why you won't bother repeater towers or anyone else generally is due to thinks like offset and tone. Which are like "keys" or sort of like a password to make them work. Most repeaters take tone of some sort to worn. If you don't program the tone it you won't hear shit or be able to use. And just like with the offset. So a repeater is 147.40 let's say but it has a +5mhz offset. So when you key into it your actually talking on 147.90 and it rebroadcasting you on 147.40

So for simplex you just pick a frequency you want and use it. Go for low power to not intrude on too much and make your battery last longer.

When you say low power, like bottom of the citizen range? Like 141.2 and up? So around that bottom range?

Why would in use uhf or monitor uhf vs vhf? VHF is a longer wave so it would have a longer range right?

No lower wattage. You radio should be able to do 1w or 5w probably. Power setting in it I'm sure.

Yes vhf tends to have longer range. But uhf due to short wave lengths actually can work better in mountainous areas or canyons and it'll reflect and bounce around a lot.

Other than that. It's most just whatever the people that setup the repeater wanted.

These radios go to 8 (irrelevant difference). But i gotcha. Can always up the power if groups get separated. So using uhf or vhf...just play around with it and see what works better?

Sounds like from my reading 2m still is the general *better* option for the area I’m in. Also looks like I should get a long, expandable antenna for better range

Also read a story of a guy who had a 2m Ht and made an inverted j antenna with 35ft of wire, tossed it in a tree and connected with someone in Texas from the Sierra Nevada’s. That’s rad!
